Windowsill gardening question

I have a windowsill that gets sun for a few hours a day, maybe a few more hours of indirect sunlight.  The sill in question is 30" in useful length, and 8 1/2" inches deep.

What food crops can I grow on my window?  I am thinking maybe basil, but can I grow anything more substantial, other than spices?   Something that won't grow too tall and would be useful and fun and tasty to eat.  I suppose some sort of little tiny wildflowers could be good if a mini urban farmstead could not be set up.

What would you do?

Small containers of herbs would be excellent.  Basil, thyme, oregano, parsley and sage are all good choices.

I bet you could find small pot for sale at the local farmers market.  Do you have place where you can walk to buy fresh fruits and veggies?  Or is there a plant store close by?  I know for sure you can buy a window sill garden off of Amazaon.
