Airehead Posted October 3, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2017 I had baked oatmeal for breakfast at a dinner in PA today. I have never even heard of it before this. Had apples and spices in it. It was delicious. Is this a Pennsylvania Dutch thing?

If you come to MCC Bike Michiana with @Longjohn and me you will get it Sunday morning or breakfast. Very good.

I did-- can't buy it in Rochester and always reminds me of my grand parents . My folks were vegetarian, this set of grandparents was not. It’s frozen so it’s in a meat case with the oddball frozen meat groups.. Thaw it just enough to lop off a piece and re-freeze the rest. Infinite shelf life. pedalphile Posted October 4, 2017 Share #13 Posted October 4, 2017 I've made the Aga recipe for porridge using the whole oat grain rather than the rolled flakes, you do it overnight in the cool oven, that is real hard core belly timber.
pedalphile Posted October 4, 2017 Share #14 Posted October 4, 2017 So, when it comes to this dish, are you with, or without salt? For me it has to be with salt, that's how I was raised by my Scottish parents.

They're nice toasted then cooked like rice, too.

I finally remembered the name we allus called them, oat groats. They are available here but only through specialist whole food or organic suppliers, not mainstream stores. Another thing you can do with them is sprout them, but I prefer wheat berries for that.
