That activates stabiliser muscles, good at preventing injury. The video is about the Pavel Press, skip the first minute. Pavel is the real deal.

There's a bunch of exercises like that, and they are a good idea. I never get around to actually doing them unless I am in PT, but I should.

Just didn't have the correct exercise equipment. They did't provide a pole (or ribbon strands) at the gym?
