Caretaker Posted September 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2017 On Sunday over 80 thousand spectators will watch the All Ireland Senior Football Final between Dublin and Mayo in Croke Park stadium just a couple of hundred yards down the road from me. The locals are putting out the flags. It's a re-run of last year's final and Dublin are going for three wins in a row.

Dublin have now won three years in a row and Mayo, despite being close so many times, still haven't won since 1951.

Whoo hoo! Driveway? The game is over and the Dubs won and anyway there's a police barrier stopping non-residents from entering the area on match-days

Or is it a rugby match?

Or is it a rugby match? It's Gaelic football. Played with a round ball, players (15 per side) can handle and run with the ball for a certain number of steps before they have to move it from their hands. Points are scored by kicking the ball between the posts and goals (equal to three points) by kicking into the net. Game lasts 70 minutes with one break. It's an amateur sport and the players have day jobs, for example the Dublin captain is a secondary (High) school teacher. 1
smudge ★ Posted September 17, 2017 Share #11 Posted September 17, 2017 Huh! Learned something! So if it's an amateur sport, 80,000 spectators is pretty impressive! Bummer you don't have space to rent.
