Popular Post Some Old Guy Posted February 27, 2021 Popular Post Share #1 Posted February 27, 2021 In the 50's and 60's, carports were an excellent alternative to a garage. Just drive under and get out. No garage door to fiddle with and plenty of protection for the occupants from the weather while boarding and loading/unloading. Protection from the weather for the vehicle and cheaper to construct and maintain than a garage. Win-win-win. I love my 1960's era carport. 3
Ralphie ★ Posted February 27, 2021 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2021 I just picture them as being a hazard in heavy wind, but you are right, they do make some sense. Another main benefit is UV protection, although I guess low angle sun can still get in. But the heaviest noon stuff is blocked oot. They are also a great mounting spot for solar collectors.
Further Posted February 27, 2021 Share #3 Posted February 27, 2021 Walls and a door add a lot of security. A door opener gives back the convenience. I love my door opener
Some Old Guy Posted February 27, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted February 27, 2021 Mine is attached to my house on two sides, so only the north and west sides are susceptible to the elements. And I drive my truck in as far as possible to avoid most of the sun and rain. If you have a large three-sided carport like my uncle did, it was almost as good as a garage.

Further Posted February 27, 2021 Share #6 Posted February 27, 2021 I want to build a shed to store my lawn & garden stuff, I would love to just build a 3 sided lean to type thing, but I'm afraid small stuff like trimers & chainsaws would disappear. Airehead Posted February 27, 2021 Share #7 Posted February 27, 2021 We had a carport at my family beach house at Cove Point. We used to sit there more than park cars there. My brother found a case of really old coke with cocaine when he was cleaning the little attached storage area @MickinMD, I bet you know this area near Salamons island.

We always have parked in our garage. Our old home had a 2 car garage, we have 3 cars. One got neglected and parked outside. Yeah my car. That way WoBG never had to scrap frost / remove snow / get rained on, etc... Now we have a 3 car garage, for the cars and 5 bikes hang from the celling. It's big enough to park our JD tractor inside too.

My brother lives in Lothian, and I always wonder what Solomon's Island is like as we pass the roads signs for it. Lothian is a beautiful area. Reminds me of Hootersville, Hmm, I 'spose I could have googled it before. Look' snice.

JerrySTL ★ Posted February 28, 2021 Share #15 Posted February 28, 2021 I lived in one place that had an attached carport. It beat no covering at all especially in snow; however, I'd rather have a garage any day.
