Popular Post smudge ★ Posted January 21 Popular Post Share #1 Posted January 21 Well, not the tractor. I got into some gravel on the driveway and broke a shear pin on the fan. The auger was still going, but nothing was coming out of the chute. As I was digging the snow out of the chute I saw a little blue piece. It was the head of the shear pin. Then I saw where it was supposed to go. I figured it would be an easy fix, but they didn't give me that type of shear pin! They gave me two other types, but not the one that broke. Figures. I'm hoping to go back on Wednesday to replace the pin and adjust the shoe height. Oh, I need a new cotter pin too. I was brushing snow away and PING! Stupid cotter pin when zinging past my head. WTH??!! Anyway, the walk- behind snowblower worked like a champ and cleaned up the rest. That and the shovel. Kinda ticked that the security cameras at camp didn't get any video of me using the damned tractor! Drove repeatedly past three of them! Great security.... Anyway, I learned a lot. Not sure I love it, but at least I know how to use it. 4 1

And it will save you a trip for the next time it does it thing. 3

Kirby Posted January 21 Share #5 Posted January 21 I suspect Smudge is speaking English, but I don't really understand a thing she's saying. Kudos to you for even knowing what a shear pin is! I went to get some takeout for lunch today and was afraid the roads might not be 100% cleared. 1

KrAzY Posted January 21 Share #7 Posted January 21 who needs a shear pin? Just get a regular bolt.. I know when I busted the one on my auger for the snowblower, I just shoved a nail in the opening and bent it.. no problems after that. Granted I was using it for seeing how far I could launch frozen newspapers.

Bikeguy Posted January 21 Share #9 Posted January 21 1 hour ago, Kirby said: Kudos to you for even knowing what a shear pin is! If there is some object (like a rock) that gets sucked into the snow blower, and it gets jammed between the frame and the rotating auger, usually something will break, because the motor is still trying to turn the auger. The shear pin is weak enough to break first before something expensive would break. The motor keeps running and is not damaged, the auger survives too because it is not longer connected to the motor.

groupw Posted January 22 Share #12 Posted January 22 Not so much cotter pins, but we used to call e-clips “Jeezus clips”. As in “Jeezus! Where did that fly to?!?”
sheep_herder ★ Posted January 22 Share #13 Posted January 22 Changing shear pins in a 12 hp SeeBee OBM while hanging overboard in a 14'-boat in the bay was always a bit exciting. Yes, we kept extras.

Further Posted January 22 Share #16 Posted January 22 Local hardware store had a box of snowblower shear pins next to the cash register the other day. Guess it was a popular item..
Longjohn ★ Posted January 22 Share #17 Posted January 22 I sheared pins all the time when I had gravel in my driveway. I had to buy new gravel every year (I think the Chinese got all my gravel now). The last time I bought milled blacktop instead of gravel and I quit shearing pins and I haven’t had to add any more for about ten years.
