Do you take words at face value...

The meaning depends on who says the words.

If my brother says, "Let's eat at a good restaurant," he means one with really good food and preferably cheap.

If the woman I'm dating says, "Let's eat at a good restaurant," she means Ruth Chris Steakhouse or Fogo de Chao in Baltimore, Les Folies Brasserie in Annapolis, or something similar that will empty my wallet.

Sometimes the meaning isn't clear.

A soldier got a letter from home, read it, and began to cry.

He read it again and laughed.

Then he read it again and cried, then again and laughed.

The rest of the platoon asked him why the same letter was generating different emotions.

"Well," he replied, "If it's an 'o' my uncle shot himself."
