BR46 Posted August 17, 2022 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2022 Do you like to hear it close to the original or something completely different?

That’s more of a “mash-up”, but I certainly enjoyed that. It would be more fun to see that in a bar than a straight cover of either, though. And if you’re gonna cover it, May as well make it your own.
jsharr ★ Posted August 17, 2022 Share #3 Posted August 17, 2022 I liked the white dress / negligee more than the black tights and striped shirt.
JerrySTL ★ Posted August 17, 2022 Share #4 Posted August 17, 2022 Depends. Hendrix cover of All Along The Watchtower was so awesome that Dylan started playing it that way also.
Longjohn ★ Posted August 17, 2022 Share #5 Posted August 17, 2022 I like to hear a tribute album where groups pay tribute to a song writer by doing a cover of his songs in their own style. 1
Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted August 17, 2022 Share #6 Posted August 17, 2022 What @Longjohnsaid. I prefer interpretations rather than true covers of the original.

BR46 Posted August 18, 2022 Author Share #8 Posted August 18, 2022 A friend of mine is a drummer and he hates when a band doesn't play a song like the original. I tell him that Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Van Halen all did covers and didn't play them like the original. They made them their own and became famous because of it.
groupw Posted August 18, 2022 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2022 I like covers that go their own way. I have a friend whose band reinterprets songs all the time. Even songs they love to do may be completely different from one song to the next. He loves to play “Folsom Prison Blues” and my favorite version was a Cajun version! His wife sings in the band. She does a cover of “Hound Dog” that is somewhere between Big Momma Thornton’s version and BB King’s “The Thrill is Gone”. We literally went from acquaintances to friends the first night they performed it. She’s not totally comfortable being featured or being in the spotlight, but she performs it whenever ever we are in the audience because they know we love it. I love watching jaws drop the first time they hear her sing it!

dinneR ★ Posted August 18, 2022 Share #14 Posted August 18, 2022 I saw these guys play Ring of Fire at First Ave many, many years ago. I saw Johnny play it at the IL State Fair in the 70s. Both were awesome. Make it your own.

UglyBob Posted August 18, 2022 Share #16 Posted August 18, 2022 Like @Longjohn I really enjoy when a band or artist puts their own spin on something and it creates a whole new feeling. Good examples would be Johnny Cash doing "Hurt", Disturber's version of "The Sound of Silence", and Molly Hatchet's cover of "Dreams". One of my all time favorites is John Moreland singing Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road". BTW, We just saw Moreland perform Sunday night. It was amazing.
dinneR ★ Posted August 18, 2022 Share #17 Posted August 18, 2022 Lukas Nelson does some great covers of Clapton, Neil, and Paul Simon. But this is not a cover. He played the Fireman's Ball here a few years ago with Jalan Crossland. My GF bought tickets for us and said we're going. Damn we had fun.
MickinMD ★ Posted August 18, 2022 Share #18 Posted August 18, 2022 In the case of Folsom Prison Blues, I like the Johnny Cash version better because the music slightly imitates the sound of a train - which is the subject of the song. A hard rock version could do the same, so I'm not impressed with the Surreal McCoys version.
