AirwickWithCheese Posted January 14, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2015 A year ago my department went to 12 hour shifts. We were allowed to vote with appx. 88% voting for 12 hour days. We were sold the promise of having half the days of a year off and every other week being a 3 day weekend. Well, not so fast. 1 year later I would go back if I could. 8 hour days mean you have some time to enjoy each and every day, not only half the days. It's not worth it. It's totally different when you're your own boss, but if you're working a standard 40 hr week for salary, 8 hr days are better than 12. Agree? JerrySTL ★ Posted January 14, 2015 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2015 I like 24-hour days. WoJSTL's job in the hospital is one of the few that are 8-hour days. However they are usually more like 10-hour days. If they went to twelves, she'd probably be there for 14 or 15 hours then have to be back at work the next morning at least once a week. She and two other nurses threatened to retire if they instituted twelves. So far that's kept things at 8 hours.
AirwickWithCheese Posted January 14, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted January 14, 2015 Hospital work is mentality draining. Your wife is a saint. I also think the hours are an important factor. 4 am - noon, or 9-5 is beautiful. 7 am - 7 pm stinks.
Dirtyhip Posted January 14, 2015 Share #4 Posted January 14, 2015 My husband does 12 hour nursing shifts. He only works two days in a row. It's like 2 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on, 2 days off, two days on and then a 3 day off...then repeat. It is a tiring shift, but he never works more than 2 days in a row. AirwickWithCheese Posted January 14, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted January 14, 2015 Ours is 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off. How does K like it?
Dirtyhip Posted January 14, 2015 Share #6 Posted January 14, 2015 He loves his shift. It's the 4 days off per week that he loves. If he does a 3 day pull (like takin an extra shift), he is quite grumpy. A 3 day stint of 12's is hard on ya.
AirwickWithCheese Posted January 14, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted January 14, 2015 Indeed. We do the 3 day stint every other week. :(
Dirtyhip Posted January 14, 2015 Share #8 Posted January 14, 2015 Some have said that the 12 hour nursing shift is dangerous. When you are tired, mistakes may happen.
Kirby Posted January 14, 2015 Share #9 Posted January 14, 2015 I've had stretches at work where I've worked 12 hour days for a long period and it can get very tiring. One advantage I could see is if someone had a long commute and you were able to save a lot of time by working fewer days. But if you're not saving significant time on the commute, I can see how that schedule would be difficult in the long run. If you're able to use the extra days off for something fun that you wouldn't be able to do on a work day, such as a day trip somewhere fun, it might help make up for the long days. KrAzY Posted January 14, 2015 Share #10 Posted January 14, 2015 Before I told my job to F off and went back to school.. I was pulling down somewhere near 100 hour work weeks.. I was always gone, but I made a bankroll of cash I tell you! This is the reason I am able to not work and go to school full time

petitepedal ★ Posted January 14, 2015 Share #13 Posted January 14, 2015 I had a job for just a few months that was 4 - 10's ....it took me a bit to get use to the extra hour in the AM...but 3 day weekends were nice. The Iron mines were swing shifts...I don't quite recall how many days of which in each rotation, but you came off midnights on Thursday morning and went back to work Monday afternoon shift.... Longjohn ★ Posted January 14, 2015 Share #14 Posted January 14, 2015 My wife works four tens and loves it. She has Sunday, Monday, and Thursday off each week, if she needs to take off on a Saturday she works on Thursday. She has an hour commute so she saves by working four tens. tybeegb Posted January 14, 2015 Share #15 Posted January 14, 2015 I would always vote for 8 hour days. In some jobs, after 8 hours you start to lose focus on what you need to do and start looking at the clock. Productivity goes down, mistakes are made, and how much time are you actually working during those 10 or 12 hours? Some people are more "energetic" than others about their jobs, and it would not affect them, but some just want the day to end.
team scooter Posted January 14, 2015 Share #16 Posted January 14, 2015 Labor unions fought for years to get workers an eight hour work day for good reason. In my current job search, I've noticed that 10-12 hour work shifts are more common than 8 hours. What's up with that? Are we moving backwards into the 1800s again? http://news.discovery.com/history/history-of-the-8-hour-work-day-120501.htm
