Razors Edge ★ Posted July 16, 2018 Share #1 Posted July 16, 2018 ...is all the new fresh pavement that has been laid down over the past three months or so. Smooth tarmac is the best tarmac. As I branch back out into longer rides, I am seeing more and more repaved secondary roads, and that definitely makes country rides better. I do encounter it on occasion, but that is generally not on my rides. Tom

A couple years ago they started using a really fine crushed chip and then doing an overspray of sealer on the more well traveled roads. It was like new pavement. This year it looks like they are also adding the topcoat sealer to all the roads they use normal sized chip. It helps a lot.

ChrisL Posted July 16, 2018 Share #6 Posted July 16, 2018 On our ride up in Central CA I really saw first hand how good our roads are in SoCal. The roads up there were pretty worn with lots of pot holes. We really do ride on exceptional pavement where I live.

donkpow Posted July 16, 2018 Share #8 Posted July 16, 2018 One of the nearby townships in our county has excellent roads. Getting there, however, is a pain.
JerrySTL ★ Posted July 16, 2018 Share #9 Posted July 16, 2018 Lucky you. It's chip and seal time around here and they are using less seal to save money. Heck they even chipped and sealed the city street that I live on. Things are so bad that we don't call out gravel on corners. It's assumed.
donkpow Posted July 16, 2018 Share #10 Posted July 16, 2018 Chip and seal would be an improvement around here.

Ralphie ★ Posted July 17, 2018 Share #12 Posted July 17, 2018 I hate chip seal with a passion! Thankfully it is fairly rare around here.
