If people would stop acting like assholes, I wouldn't have to ask so regularly for people to stop acting like assholes and post topics like that.  I guess I'm asking too much.

People are people.  That sounds like a song or something, doesn't it?

I am not acting.  Just so we are clear on that point.

"Oh, look at me, I am pinnned", exclaimed the post, arrogantly.  "I am soooooo important that everyone must look at me continually.  Look at me.  LOOK at ME!" it cried out, "LOOK at ME!".

Meanwhile, others were clamoring for the post's demise, angered that they were constantly confronted with something that should stand on its own, without outside help and interference. "Let it sink or fly of its own accord", they cried, "All posts begin equally", they sensibly stated.  "We will shirley all get painful rectal itch from that foppish, vain post, whatever shall we do?", they continued, as they know they all felt diminished by the pinned topic's mere presence.

Truer words have never been written.

Bump for yet another non-necessarily pinned post.  Geez people, wth?

Before you go getting all rippy about this, realize what even makes a post pinnable.   Ask yourself:

  • Is this crucial information?  90+% of the time, pinned posts are not crucial.
  • Is the post critical for sporadic members to see?
  • Is it timely for a majority of posters?
  • Is this something needed to catch people up on?  Serious illness or major event for past members of this and LF, and maybe even for the misguided people from bikeforums.suckass?
  • Change of forum policy by SW?

I am sure there are other criteria to look for that I am too tired to remember or recognize right now.

So let's take a look at the current pinned topic.

Is the pinning crucial?  No, not really, seems like a cross-fitty cult thing that is primarily unsustainable.

Critical for sporadic posters/lurkers?  No, they are sporadic, and sporadic folks most probably are not interested in something like this.

Timely?  This may be timely, as the month just started, but do we have a declaration of "challenge accepted" by the majority or even a critical mass?  I don't think we do, but I haven't been paying attention to this until now.

Life event of current or past forum peeps?  No.

Change of policy?  No.

I don't want to rain on the squatter's parade, because I do feel it is a noble pursuit (however unsustainable I feel it is).  It may have a fringe qualification on the timeliness of it, but even if it is pinned for the few that are doing it, it should have an extremely brief life as a pinned topic.

If some people are into it and stick with it, what is to stop people from bumping it up as they keep up with it?  It is cool to hear about progress and all, but that hardly merits a pinned topic.

Or maybe I just illogically can't stand pinned topics.

This is still great writing, I have to commend the author, who feels sad that others feel their posts are not all they could be and need to be on the "leg up" program to be relevant.  It seems that a post getting put on top without earning it is somewhat socialistic, right?

Do we need up voting and down voting?

You know, everybody who is logical realizes that it shouldn't be a pinned post.  The few who are irrational and overly emotional just can't get out of their own heads enough to see it.  People who aren't all that smart about certain things think that post should be pinned just because they are participating.

Way to narrow the field down a bit lot!

Do you think there is hope they will see the light?  I think people would still add to it and it will pop up whenever someone updates, but maybe they don't realize that?  Can people be rehabilitated if they were never habilitated?

Did you really digest it?

Even after posting it I hid posts and locked topics.

I need to except the new norm, people just don't care about anything any longer, and that includes social etiquette.

You could look at it another way.  Your post is like the covid vaccine.  It stops the worst cases, but breakthough cases can occur, but are mild.  A booster may be needed from time to time.

At any rate, I was agreeing with RR because pinned topics tend the outlive the usefulness of the pinning.  At some point they stop being seen and gum up the list.  Have you seen forums where half the first page or more consists of pinned topics?  Yikes!

Maybe people would respond better if the admonitions against discussing politics and exhibiting bad behavior were written out on the Cafe masthead for all to see, rather than being relatively hidden in a "reminder" topic.  Then people would see it every time they visited, instead of just the one time that they may have bothered to open the thread.  Just a thought.

Your Brian is doing well for having so many miles on it. Congrats!  :D

Yeah, a motto like the love forum used to have would be a good mnemonic!  Something like “Drivel. Non political. Non-religious. Just pleasant drivel”.
Let’s hear what you got, people! (I miss the love forum motto.  Something like  “Let’s talk about the feelings and stuff that make cycling the best sport in the the world.” )

All I want for Christmas is a custom game for parties and gatherings. “Pin the Topic on RG”. Have a picture of RG posted, life size preferably. Players are blindfolded and choose dongs or boobs labeled “Topic”. And pin them to the picture. If we’d started this in the summer, we’d have some ready for sale for the holidays.

The Dredge Metre gets it. It’s old. And worn out.
Ps. The Dredge Metre is over your butt stuff, too. Keep it fresh on that front, as well.

WRONG!  Did you see the pinned post that necessitated the bump?  It wasn't a dredge for fun, trust me.

Butts are funny, btw.  What thread are you thinking of?
