12string Posted April 23, 2018 Share #101 Posted April 23, 2018 I didn't expect the Flyers to win this series. Sure they were only 2 points behind the Pens, but it's just a bad matchup. Flyers have a steep dropoff after their top players, Pens are deep. Flyers have a VERY young defensive corp (their top 4 have less than 7 total years experience), experience is a major factor in stopping Crosby, Malkin, Kessel...... Pens D is not very solid. Murray has been beatable. They are in for a surprise next round, it won't be so easy. I wasn't too upset about the loss, I expected no more than 6 games. I didn't like the way it went down. Couturier having a legendary day, Provorov gallantly playing with one arm. And back from a defecit to go up 4-2. Then Gudas with 2 awful turnovers, game is tied, Provorov tried to make a play that needed both arms, down 5-4. Then the ugliness of 2 brutal non-calls that led directly to goals at the end. Not saying they in any way cost the Flyers the game, just that they were brutal, and felt like the refs twisting the knife that was already there. Would have been easier to stomach the furious empty net push simply failing
Prophet Zacharia Posted April 23, 2018 Author Share #102 Posted April 23, 2018 The more I look at the “trip” the more I believe it was the right non-call. Letang hits the puck and Couturier goes down. And Couturier launching himself as if shot from a cannon didn’t help, IMO. and I still can’t understand how a hit on a player who has passed the puck, with the checker’s skates leaving the ice, that leaves the the checked player with a bloody mouth isn’t an infraction. Flyers were 0-22 on the PP against the Pens at home this season. personally, I think this game was the wake up call for the Pens. First time the series got dirty, gritty and hard. I think they responded well. They’ll need that attitude going into round 2.
Prophet Zacharia Posted April 24, 2018 Author Share #103 Posted April 24, 2018 Washington closes out the series on the road. Unfortunately for the Caps, they have to start round two at home. I’ll take Pens in 7. Picking more from the heart at this point. The clock has to run out at some point. Toronto forces game 7 with a 3-1 win. I’ll take Tampa Bay over whoever wins. Bruins were my pick to play in ECF to start the playoffs, but the Bolts are now well rested.

As for flying (seriously, a Pens fan can't complain about diving) off his feet, he was already leaning, and when skating on a torn ACL, you give up your feet when you get a stick in your skates. G's feet didn't leave the ground until after the hit, and it was a continuation play, you are allowed to follow through after the puck leaves the stick. Perfectly legal. Not like the crosscheck he got to the head after the puck left the zone. Pens did respond to the playoff atmosphere FAR better than the Flyers. It was a wake up call for the Pens' next series. It was an initiation for 7 Flyers who played NHL playoffs for the first time.
Prophet Zacharia Posted April 24, 2018 Author Share #106 Posted April 24, 2018 Letang must be the strongest man in the league if he can launch Coots three feet into the air with a one handed swipe at the puck, which he did hit before Coots went airborne. We can debate all day if G’s skates left the ice before the hit or as a result of the contact, but Hagelin didn’t have the puck and left the encounter with a bloody mouth, there’s no way the hit didn’t substantially impact his face/head for that to happen. I know the argument is “finishing his check” but the puck was gone and it was interference.

I know the argument is “finishing his check” but the puck was gone and it was interference. I told you why Coots "launched". It is legal to hit a guy who just passed the puck as a continuation. Head contact is not illegal unless the head is targeted. G hit him with a shoulder in the chest. Bloody mouth - ask Lindblom about how that feels, he took if from a stick no where near a play. Or Manning from Malkin's spear in the eye. Or maybe you want Lehtera suspended for injuring Malkin in the process of being slew footed? There's plenty to choose from. Give the Pens credit, they took advantage of what the refs didn't call, Flyers didn't. I blame the refs and league more for thinking rules should stop existing after the regular season. That was the point of my OP, not what Letang did to Coots, it didn't look intentional, but that this "let them play" idea actually doesn't let them play, it turns it into something other than hockey. Prophet Zacharia Posted April 24, 2018 Author Share #108 Posted April 24, 2018 We could go for hours debating specifics. I’ll stop, and agree with the idea that a consistently called game is the best game to watch. Congratulations to your team for a very good series. They showed a lot of heart. I hope they meet again in the playoffs again soon, the rivalry is strong. Now if we could keep the beer cans off the ice!

Yup, I just want to know what's a penalty, and what isn't, and call 'em like they're serious about reducing injuries. The stuff on the ice was uncalled for. Except for the hats, that was one of the most amazing sporting efforts you'll see - 3 goals, 2 assists, with a torn MCL. A warrior! I didn't think it was going 7 anyway, I was happy with the way the team responded. The coach, not so much. Just a shame it took 6 games to finally turn into Flyers-Pens playoffs! 12string Posted April 25, 2018 Share #121 Posted April 25, 2018 I do think the Bolts are the team to beat. Locker day in Philly, end of season press day. Still haven't gotten word on all of Simmonds issues, but Provorov played game 6 with a grade III AC separation! Said by the third period he had no feeling in his arm. Explains that awful turnover that led to a goal. Another reason this coach is not good. Sure, he was the best Dman by a long shot - when he had 2 arms. Bad enough to only dress 6 D, but he could barely push a puck and he was on the #1 PP.

I'm still thinking the Caps will pull out in the end but they can't be rolled that hard and think to maintain on ice. Knights were on point last night! 7-0 over sharks?!? I was expecting the sharks to show them what a seasoned roster can put together but the woefully underestimated the Knights. They really need to review Fleury in net. Three shutouts already in the playoffs? That guys a brick wall. I will be downtown tomorrow for the watch party, couldn't swing tickets, and all the fun that follows watching my Bolts hammer Bruins.
