maddmaxx ★ Posted October 7, 2019 Share #11 Posted October 7, 2019 In the meantime there was a special unit responsible for tracking down all the illegal drone users who were buzzing around and endangering the balloons. https://www.koat.com/article/flying-drones-at-balloon-fiesta-could-lead-to-federal-charges/29371505# This has become the problem with drones........unthinking users. Not sure if this is ruination or salvation yet.

So, every man jack with a camera is trying to get a perfect shot. Including drone operators.

It’s called a kiss. They touch and bounce back. Collision with power lines is more common than balloons hitting each other. Last year we saw an envelope that was still on the ground catch a strong wind and take off, dragging the basket and the people inside hundreds of yards. The person holding the tether couldn’t keep it down. There were injured and severe damage to the envelope. It was horrible to watch.

Information like this is available to licensed, registered drone pilots. In addition, getting paid to take a picture now requires a commercial drone license and additional schooling regarding how and where to fly when people on the ground are involved. MoseySusan Posted October 8, 2019 Author Share #26 Posted October 8, 2019 Crashes today. A few that were minor and one that lit the basket, envelope, and surrounding brush afire.
Square Wheels Posted October 8, 2019 Share #27 Posted October 8, 2019 I don't understand ballooning. Essentially the only real control you have is how how up you go.

They turn on the burner to heat up the air and rise, and they pull a cord that opens a flap to release some hot air to descend quickly. If they don't do anything, the air cools somewhat slowly and they descend slowly. The air flow here between the mountains and river valley forms a "box." The balloons rise from the ground and float south, then they ascend a few hundred feet and catch an air flow going north. Then they descend and head south again. I like to watch them descend to the river in what's called "splash and dash." They touch down on the water, then fire the burner and ascend really fast.

Up and down get you into air moving in different directions. Like life, you don't always get what you want, but you can usually get something different from what you have.
