Technically, a diva is a famous, acclaimed opera singer.  A prima donna is the lead female singer in an opera - who may or may not be famous.

I've met one opera grand diva, Hyunah Yu, and she got the title by being a superb soprano who has sung on several continents and often at Carnegie Hall in NY.  A graduate of the Peabody Instiute of Johns Hopkins U., she attended a recital where she complimented me after I played Schumann's "First Sorrow" on piano - a big thrill for me.

Post-recital critique. Standing L-R, Me, Grand Diva Hyunah Yu. Sitting and talking to me: the late Piano Virtuoso Frances Cheng-Koors, Shanghai Child Prodigy, Peabody Piano Chairwoman, my piano teacher.  She was one of the few people invited to the Salzburg, Austria Music Festival each year to play on Mozart's own piano.
