We had a few good days in January and that was it. Last year I missed the January run and came up short, too.
Longjohn ★ Posted May 4, 2018 Share #8 Posted May 4, 2018 I saw smoke coming from all the sugar shacks on my road so they were cooking something. Maybe you are tapping the wrong kind of tree?

MickinMD ★ Posted May 4, 2018 Share #11 Posted May 4, 2018 I've heard that in some places, including Vermont, higher avg. temps are shortening the sap-running season and the sweet-spots are moving north. Here in Maryland, as a child I was taught by a transplanted Carolina Mountain Man-turned-carpenter how to make whistles from Maple branches in the Spring when the sap's running enough to allow the bark to be removed intact and it and the interior wood are modified to make the whistle. I in turn taught our next generation kids but since there's no "game mode" they were not too interested.

That’s possible. My sister lives ten miles north (and a couple of hundred feet higher) and got all the syrup they wanted and then some. One of the guys I used to work with lived south of me and a bit higher in elevation and we used to compare notes - when he had a good run, I’d have squat and vice versa. Dump the sap in the pan, light the burner and check on it every once in a while. (And hopefully you don’t burn the pan dry...)
donkpow Posted May 4, 2018 Share #14 Posted May 4, 2018 Maybe you should cut them all down and squeeze the sap out of them.

Digital_photog ★ Posted May 4, 2018 Share #17 Posted May 4, 2018 58 minutes ago, Randomguy said: RO has never visited you that I know of, wth are you talking about? Reverse Osmosis. Takes about 80% of the water out of the sap before boiling it. System has RO then steam preheat then the evaporator on the bottom where it is cooked Had about 1200 taps out.
