I played Mel Brooks and kept trying to use Spoilers as the password instead of Spoiler. :D :(  SW has a good argument about how the other style spoiler function like this will still show up in Unread posts.  Hmm, let's test for find anyhoo, because I can't post an unread post for my own self.

Spoiler

Mooseface

Hmm, did not immediately show up in a search, but it migjht take a while to get indexed or something.  But once one of you fine forumites respond to this I will be able to see how it works. :)  I would think the spoiler function remains intact.

Ralphs say the darndest things.  That type statement is actually sort of true. :D

Ok, I had that wrong, he didn't say spoiler function, he said spoiler tag.  But anyhoo, there are a brazilian ways to skin a kat, and someone has to choose, so I am happy to go along with the chosen convention.  But I can appreciate the need to know why - after all, all us 3 years olds are always saying why, why. why. :D  And it is a part of 6 sigma, the 5 whys.

As an example, why do people insist on driving in the left lane when it is 'sposed to be for passing?  Or another great example a salesman once gave me for his painfully slow product that I thought was was a singularly brilliant observation.  He said people don't tend to ask how it works as much when it works well. :D

I think we know why, it's just that the alternative way to skin a rat may be better if it encourages the most participation among our few remaining active forum members.  Just like the comic strips, we used to read them and make funny comments about them.  They were fun and enjoyable.  But now they wallow in comic strip Siberia and are mostly ignored.  Moving the Tour discussions to a password protected sub-forum means that the level of participation in Tour discussions will likely be significantly diminished.  I happen to think this place is the most fun and even the most enlightening when as many people as possible take part in any discussion.

There are many viewing options for the site.  I chose the easy way.  I click the "Unread Content" link, then when I finish that thread I simply click the "Next unread topic" link.   There is no way for me to see the Spoiler tag that way.

But why on earth would you read every topic?  Most people look at a title and decide that something can wait or if they want to open it right away.

I agree. It’s no longer an abstract issue for consideration. It’s been three days now, and there’s been no Tour discussion. Like it isn’t even happening. The sub forums have a chilling effect.

Was there Giro discussion? The Dauphine? Any of the Monuments? Any of the cyclocross season? The cyclocross World's? Unbound 200? @bikeman564™ mentioned the US National race, and we REAL TIME discussed RAAM, but otherwise, a seeming wasteland here and there of cycling race discussion.

We've done it every year for as long as I remember.  Are we still arguing over a couple of people who want to spoil spoilers?

I have thought about this some more, and from many angles.  At first I was just humoring RR, who was in an angsty mood, but deserved to be heard.  But then I thought about it more and more and came to some conclusions.

The first conclusion is that every year, somebody says something like "sure are a lot of garishly-outfitted road bike riders in one area in France, there may be a race starting up", and several other tightly wound people immediately yell and scream "SPOILER OF ALL THINGS GOOD IN THE WORLD" and "DEVIL SPAWN" and point fingers and throw rotting tomatoes and want that person to have a big S for spoiler in their avatar, and the end result is that nobody ever talks about a major interest of most of us here.  At all.

Conclusion?  RR is right. Not a damn person goes to the other area, other than a token effort, and we just don't talk about the biggest bike races on the planet.

When I can watch a stage, I watch a stage.  If I miss a stage, I read about it and I know what is happening for the next stage and I am no worse off.  I often go back and read the live report and I hear all about what happened and with a time stamp which also tells me where in the race something happened, say 60km's from the finish, some poor sap had a drone fly into him and dnf'd because he is now blind.   If I hear a spoiler, it doesn't ruin any damn thing because it is nothing without context.  If somehow it was so compelling, I can hit the highlights on youtube or somesuch and see how something unfolded.  If I go away for several days, I can look at the GC standings and read a recap and time gaps and understand what is going on pretty damn quickly, no need to go back and hear Phil and Bob talk about who scratched whose balls in the feed zone every day.

The second conclusion?  Nobody really posts even vague spoilers after the first alarmist shout-down, so spoilers really haven't been an issue anyway.  But that is beside the point.  What we have here are people who are resistant to even considering they are going about something the wrong way.  Which is exactly the way the recorders are doing it.

WHY do you have to have EVERY stage recorded if you don't plan on watching every stage you have recorded?  In case what?  Observation has proven time and again that absolutely no one  will watch even 10% of any of the recorded stages, and if those are even started, they will be ff'd through to the end and so just revealing what you would have learned by reading about it.  Yet you forget this yearly and still record them and squelch discussion so that, just in case, you might watch the ending 10 days later and not give a shit about everything else that makes the tour great to watch other than the result.  It is like you only watch money shots on pornhub and don't even look at the boobs of the hot adult stepsisters and their nude stepsister friends who are suddenly and without warning giving a handy for no good reason.

Anyway, you recorders are focusing on the wrong things in my mind, and making a tragedy up in your minds about the whole thing.  Everyone not on the forum is talking about the race in real time, so 95% of the cycling public or thereabouts.

I recommend that you watch the stage, but failing that, pull up the live report (the day of the stage) like this spoiler filled example https://www.cyclingnews.com/races/tour-de-france-2021/stage-3/live-report/   Failing that, look at the results from cycling sites as soon as the stage is over, and read an article or two about what happened to catch yourself up, and don't worry so much about stages that are already over, just watch the next stage while being fully caught up on know what is going on.  You can still watch the stage if you know what is going on in the race and still enjoy it from another perspective.  Just try it for a week or so and see if you feel better off, I implore you.  The gift in all this is that you can discuss the tour like everyone else is, yay!

Anyway, I am not expecting a change unless most of the people start clamoring for it, just expressing my view and support for RR's take on it, too.  Just as in years past, I won't post spoilers of the stage or even talk about the race except in winter when nobody will bitch too much about how they are finally getting to 17th stage of the 2018 tour.  RR never posted spoilers that I remember, we all really like the recorders even if they are wrong about the tour.

Let's try it one day on the Cafe.  We won't spill the beans in the title and we will also put "(SPOILER)" in the title as well.  Let's see if any discussion ensues.

I thought there might be a day’s lag, maybe two days since the event started on a weekend. We’re going on three days of sitting on our hands waiting for the go-ahead.

The go ahead is at a nebulous time, never defined, never talked about.

WTAF is right!  Porn is so silly these days, not like in the old days when people were overly hairy everywhere and the movies had plots for some reason.  Now they just have titles which make no sense.

It seems to me that if there is a thread titled "Stage Three (SPOILER)" and it has a spoiler tag, people who don't want to read it can simply not read it.

That doesn't work because SW said he reads every post sequentially and doesn't even read the titles.  I really don't understand it, it is like language has no meaning any more.

I could make better porn with my eyes closed and one hand tied behind my back.  I wouldn't once use the terms "stepsister" or "step mom" or "pizza boy".

Maybe for just three weeks, he could read the titles before opening them.  :)

Balkanization is indeed a thing! Cough cough bike forums.  Hierarchies don’t really work. What works is keeping all the world’s info in a big wug and letting google sort it oot. Not a direct analogy to a forum though, because here clutter matters. It is indeed a dilemma for the ages!

Things in the Cafe have the half-life of a cicada.  Very few are "discussed" and even fewer "last" without the aid of being pinned.

Yes the one on bandages. I didn’t think it was a spoiler when I posted it. I didn’t know who that guy was that was all bandaged up. I figured he was in a race and crashed but didn’t think posting his picture was a spoiler.

Hey - there are still DAILY posts in that one!  LJ is way more entertaining than any TdF thread, so having his topic pinned keeps it right where we want it!

Yeah, but they don't really say anything anymore unless there is new news, in which case we could always pin another one.  It has been a good thread, though, plus everybody loves LJ, too!

Just got updates on his old cars! Or arteries??? Or maybe just a drive by to keep the thread packed with new news.

But now it is starting to makes sense why we can't discuss the TdF in the Cafe!  Folks can't even come close to following instructions nor be counted upon to even comprehend those instructions.

The world is doomed.
