Kirby Posted August 5, 2022 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2022 At least it's a work computer and the IT people are there to help. Hope it's fixed soon, unless you prefer it not to be fixed.

petitepedal ★ Posted August 5, 2022 Author Share #7 Posted August 5, 2022 Not doing..freezing up...IT is an off site co. The guy couldn't get on remotely I asked about getting a tech out and he said they were pretty busy.At that point I reminded him that his manager was out here yesterday telling folks that they would be on call to residents with computer issues...how do you expect to do that if you can't keep the office computer going? I got a call back and in 20 minutes they were out. 1

jdc2000 Posted August 5, 2022 Share #9 Posted August 5, 2022 Freezing up is not good. That can be a software issue, but is more often a hardware issue.

Bikeguy Posted August 5, 2022 Share #15 Posted August 5, 2022 I killed at least 2 maybe 3 laptops when I worked. Spilling coffee into the keyboard works. Dropping it works. You can have an accident and get a new computer. I sure hope your data is backed up.

Square Wheels Posted August 6, 2022 Share #18 Posted August 6, 2022 I was always pretty good at work not clicking junk we weren't supposed to. We were challenged regularly with fake emails. We were supposed to report them. If we clicked two fake email, we lost all computer access and needed to go to spam school. I never needed that. Anyhow, one day IT showed up and said we need your PC, it's infected. I said, I need it to do my job. They said no worries, continue to work on it as long as you want, we'll be taking it off the network in a few minutes. They walked out with it and brought it back scrubbed of all viruses, but also any programs I had installed. Hospitals are funny like that protecting patient info.
MickinMD ★ Posted August 6, 2022 Share #19 Posted August 6, 2022 It's lucky someone was available to pick it up with staffing shortages these days. My cousin, across the river from Wilkes-Barre, PA, owns a couple-acre "family plot" of land where he added three more houses for family and friends. He wants to put a group party area with a built-in outdoor grill, etc. in the middle of the plot but can't find the workers to do it! My nextdoor neighbor asked, when I was unboxing my shed kit, "Why don't you just hire someone to put it up for you?" I replied that I needed the exercise and that I might not be able to schedule someone competent for months and the cost would surely be more than the $549 for the Arrow shed kit itself. Yesterday, I baby-sat my brother's house in the middle of the day while a tech came out to find out why his internet, cable TV, and landline phone weren't working. The tech told me there was nothing wrong inside the house, the signal coming from outside wasn't strong enough. A line specialist would have to come out and track down the problem. But he said, due to staff shortages plus extra work because of the severe thunderstorm and winds from the previous day, that it might take 48 hours to get the line specialist there. Fortunately, the specialist was there in less than 2 hours and tracked the problem to a line junction 200 feet down the road, but it shows how hard it might be to get workers.

Years ago... when we first got our laptops at work, it was like the wild west. I loaded more than a few programs. Over the years, our IT got VERY serious. Then it was nearly impossible to load ANY program. They even locked out our ability to save files to a USB drive, or burn to a CD/DVD. Our data files were automatically synced on a network drive, and I'm sure that data was an open book to the IT when the scanned for things that were not good. About twice a year, I remember getting emails from the automated IT security, telling me I sent an email with PII (Personally Identifiable Information) data. I'd have to meet with IT and/or my manger to get me out of IT jail. All of these IT busts were for Excel data that apparently looked like (but wasn't) social security numbers. I searched and found this on an Adobe forum. This was the solution to problems where the Adobe Cloud was slowing down computers. Maybe your IT knows about this tool (or not)? Apparently Adobe considers this an 'advanced' tool. That tells me if you don't understand what they are talking about, don't use it. How and when to use the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool | Advanced steps I'd share this with your IT if your computer is still fubar'd on Monday.
