Popular Post Dottleshead ★ Posted January 9, 2022 Popular Post Share #1 Posted January 9, 2022 When my job is good, it's pretty sweet. When it's running bad, not so much. To make a long story short, management threw a bunch of security crap on our plates in a fire sale just before Christmas and it broke a lot of things. I was suppose to sail into my holiday break relaxed but I've done nothing but work. Turns out the platform that hosts all my services broke and will no longer be supported -- which means I have to migrate over to another platform that I need to do the R&D to even see if it's plausible. It should be but there's a learning curve there using new technologies. So I've temporarily set things up in my own local development workstation and have spent a lot of work and time to make that happen. I have a bunch of tests due Monday morning and it's taking up all of my time. Last night -- errr -- early this morning, I wrote another test that was part of my commitment -- which was good and needed to be done to meet said commitment -- but now I have to track down a nasty bug causing one of the other tests to fail. And since all my production services are now running on my private workstation, I can't troubleshoot it while my other tests are running. Each test is 9.5 hours long and I have 12 more to run -- three of which are dependent on said nasty bug. That means -- oh eff it. You don't care about my problems, nor does my boss. Just fix your shit, Dottles. Everybody's got their own problems. Bottom line is I went to bed at 7 a.m. this morning and the rest of my weekend --- particularly tomorrow and Monday morning -- look like hell. I want to be like @JerrySTL. I'm not kidding. That guy is my hero. 4
JerrySTL ★ Posted January 9, 2022 Share #2 Posted January 9, 2022 Remember that the difference between hero and zero is only one letter. I feel your pain. I once worked for a dickhead who wanted every security patch and upgrade installed ASAP so he could brag at the manager's meetings. I suggested that we wait at least a week to see if any issues were popping up. Nope. As you may guess, three times we had to roll back the patches after they made it out to production. Twice they were big Oracle patches. 1 1

Dottleshead ★ Posted January 9, 2022 Author Share #8 Posted January 9, 2022 Alright, so all 5 clusters are actively getting pelted with my tests. They will complete at 3 a.m. PST -- at which time I need to be awake and kick off more tests so that I can get about 6 hours to troubleshoot before I have to kick off more tests. Make sure you folks back east stop in to say Hi.

shootingstar Posted January 9, 2022 Share #10 Posted January 9, 2022 I can't imagine the frustration of your job when sr. managers have no clue what is required. Lines of coding that needs to eyeballed and checked/ tested. It's too bad that there aren't additional hardware for you to do it and more immediate instead of separately...but it sounds like something tried at home, ie. private workstation to test. My job /our work group must partner with the IT division that is responsible this corporate-wide system. It is often our central group that requests on behalf for all 40 other depts. to improve certain parts of the software application corporate-wide...usually it's integrations with other corporate software (financial, HR, GIS), workflow design or report design. Essentially there is no greener pastures. I feel I’m getting compensated fairly by market standards. So while I think a change would be good, it’d kind of be a bad move on my behalf at my age. I secretly hope I get laid off all the time but that’s not exactly a winning hand either.

Am wishing you a red carpet of good health, deep, long sleep ...you need to go for a bike ride. I know..it's been very windy, rainy...at least in Vancouver. King tides..smashing up the bike-ped paths there. We've had 9 staff changes in our team within the last 3 years (and I'm 1 of those changes). Our latest just transferred to another dept. So waiting for..hopefully another experienced hand. I like my job and consider myself normally adaptable to alot of corporate change. After all, have worked for 9 other employers. (actually more, if counting patching several part-time jobs). Maybe it's just my energy level at this time.

Popular Post Page Turner Posted January 10, 2022 Popular Post Share #27 Posted January 10, 2022 ...thank you for making another day of retirement seem especially sweet. There used to be a fire Captain I worked with who always told me that the key was to not sweat the small stuff. And that it's all small stuff. But we had the argument going for us that stuff was already on fire when we got there, so it wasn't really our fault to begin with. If you try that and it works, let me know. 3
Dottleshead ★ Posted January 10, 2022 Author Share #28 Posted January 10, 2022 I gave the effort and I think I'm going to come up short by a day -- but it is possible I can find this problem tomorrow and still hit the late, late deadline. Let's see what my manager says. Otherwise, I plan on taking a couple of days off on the company mid-week. That only puts me on equal footing with you for a couple days @Page Turner -- but I'm looking forward to my days ahead in about 10 years, whereas you, I believe, will be looking forward to them running out. 1
