Dottleshead ★ Posted February 27, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2019 I got the call tonight from my siblings. My 86 year old father fell and broke his left femur. Surgery tomorrow. Yes. I understand he had been drinking too. I am afraid there will be more down the road... especially if he doesn't stop drinking. I can hope he heals and this is his wake up call -- but I am not holding my breath.
Randomguy Posted February 27, 2019 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2019 Crap, I am sorry to hear that. 86 is the new 50, though, and hopefully he heals up in time for nicer weather.

Dottleshead ★ Posted February 28, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted February 28, 2019 I know his time is coming but not sure this is it. I went down to see him today w/ wife. His surgery is supposed to occur in about 5 hours. It's a clear break. I'm pretty sure he'll get screws. Yeah, I have concerns. Anything is possible. Kirby Posted February 28, 2019 Share #14 Posted February 28, 2019 My Mom had hip surgery for a break after a fall around that same age. She's still doing well 5 years later, but she was very diligent about doing all her rehab exercises. That is very important, and I hope your Dad has the same commitment. It will make a difference.
Dottleshead ★ Posted March 1, 2019 Author Share #15 Posted March 1, 2019 Well he had his surgery this morning and not surprising he is asleep. I understand it went well. He seems to think he is going to go home after tonight and sister says he was tearing out his monitor wires and such. Not surprising. He makes a crappy patient. Anyway, I don't think he truly gets yet the gravity of his situation. He has always been driven and I know he will do his best in physical therapy. That's one area he excels at. But he's not 34 anymore and he's likely to do more damage to himself before he is ready. Then again this could be the first mountain he is unable to scale. I see him here at least a week in hospital is my best guess and then transferred to a remote facility for at least a couple weeks. I honestly don't know what his treatment plan is yet but he is in for a rude awakening.
MickinMD ★ Posted March 1, 2019 Share #16 Posted March 1, 2019 If he has a drinking problem, he's amazing for having reached 86! My father drank too much and all of his organs were in various states of failure when he died at age 69.
Further Posted March 1, 2019 Share #17 Posted March 1, 2019 Sounds like he has spirit. Hope he can hold back enough to heal. I can empathize with him on wanting to move too fast, I hate waiting to heal.
Dottleshead ★ Posted March 1, 2019 Author Share #18 Posted March 1, 2019 He doesn't like to be confined or told what to do. I mean, who does?? But it's the result of being an only child I think. Plus he's worked for himself most his life and is an emotional, critical thinker who is a perfectionist. Great alcoholism traits methinks.

Popular Post Dottleshead ★ Posted March 3, 2019 Author Popular Post Share #21 Posted March 3, 2019 Well, I have good news to report actually. Met the old man today, and while squirrelly, he wasn't as heavily medicated and finally ate something today. He hadn't eaten anything for two days. I was also very encouraged that he did everything the physical therapist requested including lifting his leg up 10 times. Fantastic if you ask me. It has only been about 48 hours and I am encouraged. He has a LONG road of recovery ahead but my money is on him. 5
Dottleshead ★ Posted March 4, 2019 Author Share #22 Posted March 4, 2019 Well, after a sequence of blood transfusions, the doctor is saying his red blood cell count is stabilized enough to move him to an assisted living facility. I don't know. I'm not the doc and I don't have the training and background but just yesterday his blood count was dropping. I don't know how in the course of less than 24 hours they can say he's stabilized. Certainly the new place isn't fit to handle blood transfusions if required. The place he went to is part of CHI and out here in my hometown, they don't rate to high. Maybe I'm just being overprotective but it's not a hidden secret that they need the rooms at this time of year and I suspect they're just moving him out.
