  1. Got out early for 32 miles, 15.7mph avg, 1600-some climbing feet. 8 PRs and I tied for a 9th (though I can't believe I ever rode that segment so fast before). Fantastic morning, and I was home by 8:50. Cool temps but very muggy. 148 miles in the last 10 days.

  2. Did 19 on the Slate. Found another “missing” piece of the old New Oneida Lake Canal. Stands out like a turd in a punchbowl, once you know what you’re looking at. Now comes Miller Ommegang Time.

  3. A very momentous day. I haven't ridden in so long that I can't even remember when I did. 1/2 of a mile of joyful happiness. Tomorrow I will tell the PT that I am ready for a mile. Came home and iced. Everything feels great!

  14. We were planing on getting out early for a day trip to New Glarus and the twisty roads out in that area. But we got a text last night that #1 son and family are coming over for a cook out. We usually only see them once or twice a month. This will be the third time this weekend he has been over. Me thinks he is waiting for mom to throw him the keys to the new car. Happy 4th from Red, White and Blue!

  16. 13 Days of Mediterranean dining, and not skimping = 6 more pounds gone. Of course, walking 15- 20 km per day, open water swimming and weight workouts may have had something to do with it too.

  21. In 1835, a canal was opened from the Erie to Oneida Lake at Higginsville about. It was built quick and dirty - wooden locks and through swampland. When the inevitable happened and the locks needed to be repaired/replaced, in 1862, the cost of the repairs was weighed against the cost of a newer, shorter route from Durhamville. In 1863 the Oneida Lake Canal closed for good. In the meantime, the folks in the western part of the state fought the appropriation for the new one. Their fear (probably justified) was that boats would exit the Erie in Durhamville and travel through Oneida Lake, to the Oneida River, thence to the Oswego River and into Lake Ontario - shutting out the whole western part of the state. Finally, in October of 1877 the New Oneida Lake Canal opened. Two breaks in the canal - owing to it having been built through swampland and quicksand* - and it quickly closed again. In 1878, the canal opened again in July, after another break and was opened for the rest of the season. It never reopened. Owing to poor construction and lack of traffic, in 1879, abandoning the canal was recommended. In 1887, it was officially abandoned. From the satellite view, it’s still visible. On the ground, not so much. On a bike, moving more slowly (in my case MUCH more slowly...) it’s a bit easier. I went at this arguably backwards - I started at the end and went to the beginning. (Would you expect me to be less contrary?) From what little I can find, two of the locks at the lake end, still exist. One of them is referred to as “Lock 5” and the locks have been repurposed as foundations for buildings in a marina: If that’s Locks 4 & 5, that must mean there are three more...somewhere. I know where one of them is - it’s behind someone’s house and this time of year isn’t visible from the road because of the heavy undergrowth. That leaves two more... If there were a guard lock at the Durhamville end, that would leave one. I think I found it today. In the ditch alongside Rt 13 is what I thought was just a retaining wall. The more I look at it, the more I think it was a lock, that is now mostly buried under Rt. 13. About 100 yards southwest of that is another lock, behind someone’s house that is plain as day when the leaves are off the trees, but impossible to see this time of year. I also found another spot where the canal crossed Kelley Road (runs roughly east/west, below the golf course) today. Not much to look at, but kind of makes sense when you look at it in context: There are a couple more spots I’ve yet to explore - I’ll leave that for another day, but this is just about where the Oneida Lake canal joins the Erie, in Durhamville. I would have just assumed this was just a swampy area, had I not known what I was looking for: The junction where the two met seems to have been filled in and left no trace, since the Erie continued on for another 2 years or so after this canal closed, but maybe in the fall, when the leaves are off, it’ll be a little plainer. *”Hey Charlie....what is it that ain’t exactly earth but it ain’t exactly water?” “I dunno, but whatever it is, I HATE it.....”

  24. 26 independent miles @ 17.7. I was OK with that speed as I have barely ridden since I hurt my knee back in February. I also lost a pound. I weighed myself before and after. Drank 2 bottles while riding (3 total pounds) and still weighed a pound less than I started. I need to drink more.

  27. We are weeding the garden. You may land your dirigible in my 12 acre hay field next to the garden. We welcome your help. We serve ice cold tea with lemon to anyone who helps. If you do a good enough job I may even make you a hand tossed pizza and sweet corn on the grill when you are finished but that is only if I get a ride in the dirigible. When we are finished with the feast we will fire the black powder cannon to celebrate that we aren't Canadian or British. This is a much better offer than you will get from @AirwickWithCheese I heard he has his shotgun out and is guarding the fresh pie cooling in the window. You may get shot if you go there.

  35. Have you ever noticed that loaves of bread (supermarket bread, not local bakery) are always sliced in even numbers of slices? I have been monitoring this phenomenon for years and the loaves I buy invariably are sliced into even numbers. This is good if you use your bread mostly for sandwiches, like I do. The bread industry deserves some appreciation for making our pathetic bread-eating lives just a little bit better.

  41. So Sunday before last, Troop 1001 formed up, loaded their gear on a bus and 56 scouts and 6 adults set off for a week at Hale Scout Reservation in the Kiamichi Mountains in SE Oklahoma. The camp is located in the Ouchita National Forest. Lots of pines and oaks and very hilly terrain. We got to camp Sunday afternoon, got our gear and trailer to the campsite while the scouts got a tour of camp. Had Sunday dinner in the dining hall with the scouts and then went to a camp wide camp fire in the amphitheater. Good times Next day, woke up at sunrise and spent some quiet time in camp before the scouts got up for breakfast. Daily routing was up at 6:45 for scouts, breakfast at 7:30 in dining hall and then back to camp to get ready for merit badge courses from 9 am to 4 pm. Lunch at 12 noon and dinner at 5:30 Each day at lunch two scouts got to face off on the climbing wall in the dining hall. My son Ryan got to climb for Troop 1001 on Tuesday and beat a much older and larger scout up the wall in a VERY close match that was decided by the camp program director Free time from 7 to 9:15 to shoot, swim, climb, sail, canoe, etc. Ryan and I would hit the trading post to buy tickets to shoot at the ranges, get an ice cream, head to the water front and then go shoot shotguns. Monday was a bit rough helping all the young scouts find their course areas and get into a routine and over the homesickness. Tuesday was much better and by Wednesday we were going really well. Then came Thursday. Soon after lunch we began to hear scouts saying they did not feel well. Soon after that the vomiting began. By the time Thursday evening rolled around we had 14 scouts and 2 adults sick with a stomach virus. Ryan and I were part of that number. By late Thursday, much of the camp had the bug. The County Health department closed the camp and sent all the scouts home on Friday. All program areas closed. All scouts confined to their campsites. As we travel by bus due to size, we had to scramble to get our bus to camp. It did not arrive until 2 pm on Friday. We tore down camp on Friday AM. It began to rain around 9 am and sat in our tents in the rain waiting for our bus to arrive. Rain stopped around 11 am and camp supplies a light lunch around noon. We had to have extra adults ride the bus from DAllas to camp to drive my truck and our trailer tow vehicle home. Got home around 7 pm on Friday and I was in bed and out by 8 pm and slept for 12 hours. Experienced severe dehydration on Sat. Went out to try and do some yard work and I was wobbling around like I was drunk. Son was asking if I was okay. Spent the rest of the day in the house drinking Gatorade and resting. Much better yesterday and almost 100% today. Sadly, Wade got the bug from one of us and now he is throwing up. Thanks Camp Hurl
