Randomguy Posted February 11, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 11, 2015 Do I want to mash other things, things other than potatoes? I think I would like to mash sweet potatoes for a change, or even parsnips. I would also like to mash other things, like steak or bbq sauce, maybe even lettuce. Should I get a potato masher?
TrentonMakes Posted February 11, 2015 Share #2 Posted February 11, 2015 If you want really nice mashed potatoes then you don't want a potato masher - you want a potato ricer.
Randomguy Posted February 11, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted February 11, 2015 If you want really nice mashed potatoes then you don't want a potato masher - you want a potato ricer. Roadfrog was going to send me a ricer, but she couldn't find it. You can't mash with a masher??? I am confused. What about something like this?:

TrentonMakes Posted February 11, 2015 Share #5 Posted February 11, 2015 no, the one you posted would work fine. A few chunks will squeak through - a ricer will get all of them. Actually I will confess I don't own a ricer, and due to the time factor I don't aspire to get one. My dad has one and his potatoes come out nice. Just don't use a metal one in a nonstick pot. I have a nylon one of these, and it flexes so much it's pretty much useless. So get the metal one and use an appropriate pot.

Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted February 11, 2015 Share #8 Posted February 11, 2015 I used one like that to make gnocchi.
Dirtyhip Posted February 11, 2015 Share #9 Posted February 11, 2015 I use a hand held. For best results, you want a ricer. We rarely eat mashed taters.

I used a fork with the bananas in the banana bread. I didn't try too hard though, and it came out delicious and tempting, like a drunken sorority chick. Everybody had their way with the banana bread. 1
Ralphie ★ Posted February 11, 2015 Share #11 Posted February 11, 2015 I always liked the way the Kitchen Aid mixer made whipped taters, but it is old now and doesn't work quite as well.

Dirtyhip Posted February 12, 2015 Share #14 Posted February 12, 2015 I don't like mixer potatoes. They are gummier than ones with a ricer or hand smasher.
UglyBob Posted February 12, 2015 Share #15 Posted February 12, 2015 Can you use it on potato points?
Road Runner Posted February 12, 2015 Share #16 Posted February 12, 2015 You should get a potato masher and use it to make banana bread that isn't banana bread.
Parr8hed Posted February 12, 2015 Share #17 Posted February 12, 2015 I just shoot the taters with my 12 gauge until they are to my liking. You might have to pick some birdshot out of your teeth...
Randomguy Posted November 4, 2022 Author Share #18 Posted November 4, 2022 I never did get a potato smasher, and I don't think I am missing all that much at this point. The end.
Dirtyhip Posted November 4, 2022 Share #19 Posted November 4, 2022 A ricer is the proper item to use. A regular masher is fine too, but could add lumps.

Mine was acting up earlier this year. I bought new grease on amazon and took it apart and regreased it. It was disgusting inside, but now it’s great
Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted November 4, 2022 Share #21 Posted November 4, 2022 I used my potato masher to mash the canned San Marzano tomatoes for pizza sauce. I didn’t want to use my hands this time.
