Popular Post Parr8hed Posted February 19 Popular Post Share #1 Posted February 19 G started his course today. I think it is one week long. He already has his CDL permit and has been driving the trucks with other linemen with him. He is seeking a class A with air brake endorsement, trailers and no manual restriction. 3 6 2
Kirby Posted February 19 Share #2 Posted February 19 Is this just ancillary to the lineman work?

Kzoo Posted February 19 Share #5 Posted February 19 One week. Based on my limited knowledge of knowing almost nothing about the subject, that seems like a really short time for a CDL Class A course.

The big digger trucks mainly are over 26000 pounds, have air brakes, and sometimes have trailers pulling new poles. This puts you out of the ranges of conventional driver's license. Have to get a CDL to be able to drive them. He will have to only drive in Indiana until he's 21 but he can still get it. Best part of it is that the company pays him to take the class and the pick up the tab for the class. 6 1

It took me about that long to get my Class B CDL for school buses. But then I still had to log a bunch of supervised hours driving. And it was just a few hours a night. This is supposed to be a pretty intensive course. Driving and class work. Not sure how long they typically take.

KrAzY Posted February 19 Share #12 Posted February 19 Well good luck to him.. I took the class and the test last year. The key is memorization of the whole walk around more than anything else. I pulled the card for the A parts list. The lady told me she did not like that and made me do the full test. Main thing to remember is to always call out the bridge height, and also tell them every few min you are checking your mirrors. I think I still have the sheet of what to point at and memorize in my email box if he needs it 1

They do it every morning at the shop before they head out for the day and his lead lineman is making G do it all. 3

He initially thought just the one week but he was way off. He just texted us that he passed his driving test and now has a class A CDL with air brake and trailer endorsement and no manual transmission restriction. 1 11

Actually I think they should lump synchromesh transmissions with automatic and make a separate class for non synchro. In my training days we got lots of European immigrants with years of driving experience in Europe but no clue how to drive a crash box.
