Popular Post az_cyclist Posted March 25 Popular Post Share #10 Posted March 25 Multi tasking at the moment, but, it was a steady rain (and had been for 3+ hours) Saturday morning at 4:30. I needed to leave the hotel at either 4:30 or 5:00 for a 5:00 or 5:30 start time for the double. Steady rain and 52 degrees didnt equate to an enjoyable ride, so I did not start (DNS). Also, the weather channel was showing that rain would be possible for most of the route during the day. I texted and talked with my younger son (in MSP, who has taken up cycling). I was thinking of just heading back to Phoenix, but the thought occurred to me that I would still be charged for the room for Saturday. My son said can you get in a shorter ride, since you do enjoy cycling in California. Darn it! I thought about bringing my laptop, but didnt. It would have been relatively simple to create a new route. While I was talking with him I got an idea: ride the first part of the double route, then take a detour to where the last sag stop is, in Los Alamos. It was somewhat difficult to judge the distance, but I figured it was at least 50 miles. The "detour road" I was going to turn on is actually on the return for the regular route. There was plenty of elevation gain in what I did, mainly on Foxen Canyon Rd. That road was on the Tour of California race at least once. I did a couple of extra detours, and ended with 62.5 miles and 3632 ft of elevation gain. I left the hotel at 9:45, and was back about 2:20. I did get a few sprinkles about 2 miles from the end. It was a quality ride with all that climbing (the complete route had 8400 ft of elevation gain). I didnt stop for more than a few minutes (taking off arm warmers, taking a couple of pics), so it was like I rode straight thru. An added benefit was, I was back early enough to shower and have an early dinner (with 2 beers) at the Firestone Walker Brewery in Buellton. I drove there, even though it was only about a mile away, and that was a good decision since it did rain. Breakfast this morning was at a local place, Ellens Pancakes. 2 Danish pancakes, 2 over easy eggs, bacon, and coffee. Enough food that I didnt need to stop for lunch on the drive home. 4 4 3
ChrisL Posted March 25 Share #11 Posted March 25 This has been a weird year with the rain lingering much later than usual. More is coming too…

shootingstar Posted March 25 Share #13 Posted March 25 @az_cyclist Great you still did a decent but different route during time in California with good distance and climbing. For sure, we've done self-loaded bike touring in several hrs. per trip in pouring rain on 3 different trips: towards Seattle, near Montreal, and southern Ontario, which latter there were transport trucks for 1 hr. Real scary.

Yep - when you ride for pleasure and not pay, the math is pretty straightforward - will this be enjoyable or not? Heck, dark and rainy brings in "is this safe (enough) or not?" and at our ages, tempting fate is best kept at a minimum.
MoseySusan Posted March 25 Share #17 Posted March 25 Great ride! I’m glad you took the sensible approach because a metric century in beautiful places still kicks butt.
sheep_herder ★ Posted March 25 Share #18 Posted March 25 Congratulations on a wise choice. Two rain events stick in my feeble mind both on the CANDISC in North Dakota. One It started raining later in the morning and eventually became torrential with some small hail and wind. I stopped for a bit to get out of the wind behind a round hay bale. Made it to the end that day, but essential ruined my Brookes saddle. Another year a few of us sagged all day, which was the right thing to do, as by the end of the day water had filled the gutters and was running over the sidewalks. There were many miserable riders that day. Some of the scariest moments for me are early mornings in some traffic with fog that keeps fouling my glasses. I learned to not like riding in the rain.

It is a beautiful place to ride, the entire route. I forgot to mention earlier that it was the first time I had ridden that part of Foxen Cyn Rd in the daylight. Always before we were leaving at 4:30 or 5:00, and it didnt get light until almost the first sag stop at mile 40. This morning I saw pictures on the CTC Facebook page from the first sag. The road was absolutely wet, and there was a huge puddle. I am guessing I would have gotten wet multiple times, and, the wind was chilly and out of the NNW. Of course I am disappointed that I didnt ride the entire route, but, no regrets on the decision I made. There is always next year (yes, I was a Cubs fan when I lived in Indiana and Illinois). 1
