I picked up a hitchhiker last night. He gets in the car and says how do you know I’m not some deranged psychopath killer? I said because the chances of having 2 deranged psychopath killers in the same car are impossible.5 points

With rain in the forecast for the next week or more, we decided to get out early and enjoy a hike before the rain rolled in. Our chosen hike is a wooded regional park along the Potomac, and we opted for the full perimeter hike since we knew this might be it for a while. Anyway, about halfway through, the rain began. Very light at first but gradually growing in intensity. Since we were beneath the canopy, we only sporadically got hit by drops, but OMG(!), it is so nice having the trail to ourselves and being surrounded by the sound of the rain and an assortment of bird song. We ended the hike a little damp, but so refreshed. A hike in the woods is great. A hike in the woods in a gentle rain borders on sublime. Tom4 points

...we had a near tragedy here at Rancho de Turner. It was a genuine nail biter. One of the small, recently fledged hummingbirds ran smack into the sliding glass door and knocked his little ass out cold. I looked down, and there he (or she) was, lying on his (or her) back, looking pretty dead. But I know from previous experience (for some reason, these guys sometimes fly into the door and the window near the feeder when something spooks them), that unless they break their little necks, they are pretty resilient. So I went over and picked him (or her) up, and was holding him (or her) in my hand for a while, stroking it's little feathers and making some encouraging noises. This went on for about five or ten minutes (which seemed like a long time). We even walked over to the feeder when there was some movement and indications of a return to consciousness. Still he (or she) continued to sit in my hand, moving his little head from side to side, like you do when you take a header and are testing everything out to see if anything's busted. Finally, after I called my wife outside to show her what was going on, that little guy just took off out of my hand like I was Jesus and he was Lazarus, hovered just out of reach for a few seconds, like he was saying goodbye, and disappeared. The whole thing could have been an ugly start to Friday morning, but the happy ending made me feel good all day.4 points

I think the answer is 42. Also I'm not sure you googled that correctly. Normally when you Google any sort of lab results you end up having cancer.3 points

Had to replace my old rider. Apparently they had some issues with improperly torqued head bolts at the engine factory. Fortunately, I took exceptional care of mine and the motor lasted 11 years longer then most. Unfortunately, after 11 years they wouldn't replace the motor at no cost. But the dealer felt bad and gave me a few hundred off a new one, gave me a few hundred for the old one, installed a mulching kit, delivered the new one and took the old one away no charge. Good bye old friend. Hello new friend.2 points

You realize that all of this worry increases your chances of having a heart attack more than the cholesterol numbers do right? Having just gone through a bunch of tests and needle pricks etc I'm happy to report that my health is fine, my cholesterol numbers are good (doctors attitude), my heart looked great right up to and beyond hrmax and the only thing wrong was high blood pressure and extremely high blood pressure under the strain of heavy exercise. Doc agreed with me that the blood pressure controls I've been taking for more than a decade have worn out. Doubled the dosage and all is back between the black lines. In addition with my blood pressure back down I'm a swell mild mannered easy going guy again. I'm going to go take a nap.2 points

The New York Times has an article in praise of thank you notes! Not only are they important in disasters, they apparently mean more to the recipients than the senders expect.2 points

This is probably the closest I came to that. I built a Bolger Black Skimmer 25 sharpie in the 1970s and sailed it in the Everglades. This isn't mine but the same color and same color sails. Looks like a twin to mine. Plywood with epoxy and fiberglass cover. Stitch and glue construction. One of the biggest mistakes I made was selling it and buying a Catalina 22 that I still own. This site talks about building one of them. http://www.nexusmarine.com/skimmer_home.html2 points

Yeah - I think we can do some things to change our numbers (good and bad) but likely genetics and just being human means there will be a lot of variation. I may have a hard time lowering LDL but you may have challenges raising HDL. And some folks will have it easy with both, and others a hard time with both. And, I'll likely die by something crazy like a lightning strike instead of the things i worry about Tom1 point

42 I did some reading on raising HDL, and exercise is one way. Gee, I wonder if I should start exercising ? Diet may help too, I need to read some more.1 point

2 miles slowly warming up. 13 miles doing the Scott AFB Bike Ride (Race). It was advertised as a ride but soon as the starter whistle blew, it was a race for a lot of us. I came in first in my age group as I was the only one there 60+. I think that I came in something like 7th place overall. There was an 8 YO girl on a heavy bike that didn't fit her but she was all but leading the race for the first half mile. She must have been spinning at 120 rpm. I talked to her mother afterwards and said that the kid might have some real talent.1 point

We are less than an hour from home. I have to go back one day for cat scans and another day for an oncology appointment. I’ll swing by the house and put more food out for the feral cats and refill the hummingbird feeders.1 point
