  1. What you cannot see is the kid goat lying a few inches to his side. My wife was trimming on the goat, and Smokey decided to join the fun. He stayed there after my wife got up, so she took the photos. He really loves goats.

  3. Just a hair under 12 mpg on the trip down to Florida. Pretty much about what I expected. In areas where we were fighting wind it was in the 10 to 11 range and other times it was high 12s and even broke 13 on one fillup. So I would say pulling the trailer is more economical than staying in hotels.

  5. Any of you hear of the Virta Health Program? Our insurance company sent me a flier that it’s offered for free so I am going through the screening process for enrollment. It seems it’s a medically supervised health program to lower your A1C. It is based on a keto diet but they offer coaching and you are supposed to keep metrics in an app. You also provide your Dr’s information so they coordinate the program with your doctor. They schedule your labs & such so they get your vitals. I filled out my forms in the app and met with a RN today virtually. I should hear back in a week or so but she said she didn’t see any red flags that would keep me from being admitted into the program based on my medical history.

  6. ...has a dad that played football! Long before his daughter Taylor became a pop star, or started dating a certain player on the Kansas City Chiefs—in fact, long before Taylor was even born—Scott Swift went on his own journey of football discovery. Instead of landing him at the Super Bowl, this one took a teenage Scott Swift to Mānoa, Hawaii, where he played a single season of college football. Stephen Adzima roomed with Scott Swift that year in 1970, and he remembers his former teammate as studious and someone he begged not to sing. Their main experiences together included honing their football skills in games against local semi-pro teams and sneaking into a local bar. Over the decades that followed, Adzima became a big fan of Taylor Swift’s music and even noticed when she started showing up at games cheering on her beau, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who will play in this weekend’s Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers. There was one thing Adzima had no clue about until he received a call about it last week: The same Scott Swift he shared a room with was actually Taylor’s father. “I hadn’t the slightest idea,” Adzima says. Even the school’s play-by-play man in those days could hardly believe the connection. He happened to be an up-and-coming broadcaster named Al Michaels. Now one of the most famous voices in America (behind Taylor Swift), Michaels can recall long-forgotten details about Hawaii’s coach, Hawaii’s stadium, and Hawaii’s 1970 season, but he only found out about the Swift connection a few weeks ago—from fellow announcer Jim Nantz. “I wish I could tell you I remembered Taylor’s father,” Michaels says, “but I’d be lying through my teeth.” Some members of that 1970 team went on to become CEOs or play in the NFL. One, Jeris White, even won a Super Bowl with Washington, while Adzima spent time in preseason camps with the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. Only one player, though, went on to have a daughter who has won 14 Grammy Awards, launched a record-breaking concert tour, and taken over American pop culture. They called that player Scotty.

  14. It was really windy yesterday but not so much today. I’m sure trees took lines down. Local news is reporting 25 homes damaged due to mud slides. There were several swift water evacuations, mainly homeless trapped when they didn’t get out of the LA river (dry 99% of the time). Zero impact for us, this is how we spent the afternoon.

  25. So I'm off the clock but was hungry so compromised and decided to have carrot sticks. I figure they are a veggie, low cal, and simple to digest. Much better than that bowl of cereal I was thinking about. About two whole carrots for 50 calories.

  26. Years ago... I purchsed an Apple 2E computer when our daughter was in 8th grade. I used it and of course she used it for more than a few term papers. I got it with the Apple dot matrix printer. If I recall the computer had an RS232 port (if it didn't I added an RS232 card, too long ago to recall) and purchased a Xerox electric typewriter that had a RS232 port and it could be used as a printer too. Using AppleWorks for word processing and the dot matrix both setup for the same font size as the typewrite, our daughter typed the term paper, foot notes, etc... got the margins perfect and printed it on the dot matrix to verify everything was OK. Then the term paper was printed on the typewriter via the RS232, on some good typing paper. It was perfect every time. I still have the Apple 2E, and all of hardware and software and the typewriter. boxed up in my basement. It was my first home computer. I just had to save it.

  30. I like roasted carrots with chili honey drizzled on during the last few minutes in the oven. And I put chopped carrots into every soup I cook. They’re part of the onion/celery/carrot beginning to soup and stew. I’m making Guinness stew for supper tonight, and there will be carrots in there.

  35. It seems there were two areas with the serious mudflows and they were right in that swath of red from your earlier map. Not to minimize the damage but the storm seriously impacted just a handful of what, 6 million people or so. You are also correct that hillsides & cliffs do still fall days/weeks after large storms as the water saturated ground gives way. See the rich & famous like to build mega mansions on these hillsides & cliffs and often lose them, or a good portion of their property when the cliff gives way.

  36. My mother has a degree in business major from the University of Texas. She did many things in her career working in the insurance and health care industries but for a short period, she was a high school typing teacher. She sounds like a machine going off when she types and watching her write in shorthand is just freaky. She used the shorthand to take minutes at meetings, etc. I remember seeing her IBM selectric and a few of those balls.
