Further Posted August 12, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2017 I used love speed, hit 51.3 mph, tucked in and pedaling. That was a few years ago. Now I start getting nervous at 30. I used to look for the fastest line. Now I look for what is going to hurt me. Getting old sucks.
maddmaxx ★ Posted August 12, 2017 Share #2 Posted August 12, 2017 There was a time that I went 194 mph, another at 158 mph on a public road (closed temporarily for the run, did you think I was an outlaw). I was young and immortal then. Today I know that my reflexes, eyesight and coordination aren't that good. Today I cruse at 5 over the limit. On a bike I top out at about 30 now. On the trails, 20 seems fast.

smudge ★ Posted August 12, 2017 Share #5 Posted August 12, 2017 I think the fastest I've gone on a road bike was 40 mph. I've seen 21 on Map My Ride app for the fattie. THAT'S scary! Cycling related post #4.
Popular Post Mr. Silly Posted August 12, 2017 Popular Post Share #6 Posted August 12, 2017 I was averaging 14.93042 mph and was pretty comfortable riding. I then upgraded my Tiagra valve cap groupo to the carbon fiber Dura Ace caps and my speed increased to 14.93103 mph. To be honest, it is terrifying barreling down the road at that speed. I guess my comfort level is somewhere between 14.93042 mph and 14.93103 mph. 3 1
Square Wheels Posted August 12, 2017 Share #7 Posted August 12, 2017 When I hit 50, I sat up and touched the brakes. No idea what I could have topped out at, at my weight, and the hill I was on, I'd say 60. 50 was enough. Now I'm fine with 40.
Zealot Posted August 12, 2017 Share #8 Posted August 12, 2017 Have done 50+ on the road bike, downhill, racing my friend. Hit 45 on a mtb downhill back in CA. Wiped out on that run. Nowadays, I still hit over 40 on the road.
Further Posted August 12, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted August 12, 2017 I'm not afraid of dying, and pain doesn't really scare me, but recovery time does. I honestly think I'd rather be dead than have someone wipe my ass.
2Far ★ Posted August 12, 2017 Share #10 Posted August 12, 2017 Mid 30s quite a few times. One time I got the wheel shimmy going b/c of an improperly tightened steering tube, that scared me. Quite a lot of hills around here, but they all seem to have a stop sign half way down or at the bottom or both. I'm a pretty big guy, at high speeds that's a lot of energy to dissipate on rim brakes 137 on I459 in a modified 280ZX, not a closed road, I'm an outlaw
Wilbur ★ Posted August 12, 2017 Share #11 Posted August 12, 2017 M1.2 was always comfortable but now in my advanced years, M.85 is comfy and efficient.
Dirtyhip Posted August 12, 2017 Share #12 Posted August 12, 2017 49 is my top speed on the road. On a MTB, it would be probably when my husband had me on the tandem with him. We were going mid 40's. That was scary. My husband is too fast. By myself, I am going mid thirties in the dirt. In a car, I have gone mid 90's in a Toyota truck.
groupw Posted August 12, 2017 Share #13 Posted August 12, 2017 47 on the road bike a couple years ago. I hit 42 earlier this summer. Those speeds don't scare me, but they have my full attention. I was more nervous coming down South Mountain this Wednesday! Trying to get slowed down for a few of the tight corners was intense! The back end of the bike got light a few times! My fastest speed was about 32, but frequently carried speeds in the 20s through corners.

In years past I've dismounted tires that had the bead obviously overheated and partially melted. When I realized how close that must have been to popping a tube at speed I swapped over.

From work down to the parking lot is a fairly steep hill. There’s a stop sign/speed bump and a “guard shack” at the bottom. I always rail it because it’s fun. I’ve developed complete confidence in the Ultegra discs on my Slate. I have to slide my ass back, but I know I can get it whoa-ed down, no problem I was on my Roubaix a couple of weeks ago. Coming down a steep hill at about 40 and there’s an immediate left at the bottom. I was squeezing for all I was worth and still wasn’t sure I was going to get enough speed scrubbed off to make the turn. There’s a new road bike in my future next year.
Longjohn ★ Posted August 12, 2017 Share #16 Posted August 12, 2017 I never look at my bike computer because it's hard to see at the angle it's mounted. I reset it when I mounted the new tires this spring and I was looking at it recently. It shows a top speed this year of 45 mph. I must have been going down a hill.
Guest Posted August 12, 2017 Share #17 Posted August 12, 2017 51 is the fastest I've ever been on a bike. Pretty easy to hit 40+ on some of the hills around here but they are fairly short. On one of my routes as you come back into town it's a slight, 1-2%, downhill. Makes a nice little sprint. I've hit 34 on that, which technically is speeding as it's a 30 mph zone.? ChrisL Posted August 12, 2017 Share #18 Posted August 12, 2017 I really don't have hills where I ride that will get me up past 40 mph but I don't have an issue with that speed on my road bike. Fastest in a car was probably close to 130 mph in a pursuit. I rarely exceed 80 mph these days.
team scooter Posted August 12, 2017 Share #19 Posted August 12, 2017 Over fifty on my Free Spirit ten speed down a steep long hill with many driveways and crossroads on it. Some how I made it down alive, but when I grabbed a handful of brake at the end, I think I actually heard the bike say "Pfftt, good luck speed racer". Then I crashed into an old guys vegetable garden. Still have that bike 40 some years later. 2
maddmaxx ★ Posted August 12, 2017 Share #20 Posted August 12, 2017 Were those old style "can't stop when wet" steel rims? My experience with that ended up in a barb wire fence.

Looking at the picture, I recently tried to modernize it with new style pads and even a computer. Probably when I put the new gumwall tires on. I still kinda like that bike.
Ralphie ★ Posted August 12, 2017 Share #22 Posted August 12, 2017 It's also pretty flat where I ride, so this isnt an issue. Even the 30s down into creek beds is good enough for me.

Johnny Come Lately Name Posted August 12, 2017 Share #25 Posted August 12, 2017 More is better, too much is never enough. The only speed I’ve ever been uncomforable was about 50 MPH, on a tandem - but only because I was getting punched in the kidneys.
