Popular Post Airehead Posted December 29, 2021 Popular Post Share #1 Posted December 29, 2021 I mentioned an issue with Ryan way back in November and have known more since Thanksgiving but didn’t want to be a downer here for the holiday. Plus this whole process has been painstakingly slow and frustrating. He has a big tumor and needs to be seen now. Ryan has a cancerous soft tissue sarcoma on his rear leg (knee joint as it is commonly called). It is shaped like an octopus with “fingers “ along the bone and wrapped around the muscle. He has had a biopsy and a couple different specialty tests to get us to this point. On Thursday, we see Dr. Fingeroth in Buffalo. He is a specialist surgeon and we hope he has a plan. He is also a pilot that Einstein knows and sometimes does rescue flights with as needed. They originally told us he could be seen in March but suddenly called back today and said come on Thursday. We think Dr. F.may have seen the file and because he knew Einstein got us right in. We also know by March it will be too late without treatment. Our vet has told us a few options will be considered: hospice care, surgery if they can followed by chemo, surgery and radiation in Pittsburgh or total amputation of the leg. This is the most common one because it removed all the cancer unless it has metastasized. CAT scan to determine this is part of the plan. Ryan is limping but without pain. He is running and playing. We have not told him yet. Thanks for letting me share. 5

Starting hospice care for an estimated three to six months. It may have started in the fluid in the joint before it was a soft tissue sarcoma. The vet said it definitely grew from inside out and was doing damage before we saw any evidence. Removing the leg is not an option because it has spread to lungs and organs. Chemo would maybe add a few months but might also have side effects that would diminish his quality of life that is currently very good. We love him enough to do what is right for him. I feel numb. I really thought we had caught this so early. 4

Kirby Posted December 31, 2021 Share #36 Posted December 31, 2021 I am so sorry to hear this, but it definitely sounds like you are making the right decision. I gave chemo treatments to my second cat. They started out to help with some symptoms and improve her quality of life, but after the fact I realized they went on too long and didn't help her quality of life. I fear I wasn't ready to say good bye. This is heart breaking, but I admire your commitment to doing what is best for Ryan.
