sheep_herder ★ Posted October 12, 2019 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2019 Was in the bank yesterday depositing some checks and getting some cash. Noticed that a lady I know just pulled up to the teller window in drive up. I had taken some photos of her children at the cross country meet on Saturday. I asked the teller if she would tell her that I sent the photos to the school. She walked back over and told her, and the lady gave me a thumbs up. This probably wouldn't happen in a larger town.

Happens here. The tellers know me, but still have to go through that pull out your id thing for withdrawal. The teller and I laugh about that. Also, I can’t go to the bank without the obligatory catch up. Grocery stores are this way too. You better allot for story time when getting ?.
ChrisL Posted October 12, 2019 Share #4 Posted October 12, 2019 No I’m thinking the photographer would have posted the images to a shared site and sent the person an electronic message with the link. Thats how we do it in the big city!
Popular Post groupw Posted October 12, 2019 Popular Post Share #5 Posted October 12, 2019 It was so unusual last night to be at a restaurant here in town and not recognize anyone there! When my dad passed my son raised an eyebrow when I got a sympathy card from the mayor. (I do the IT for his law firm). Then when it came time to figure how we go about getting a memorial bench on the trail I said I would just call Jodi at the city. She would get me connected. My son determined I was part of the city’s “deep state”! 4

team scooter Posted October 12, 2019 Share #8 Posted October 12, 2019 I'm terrible with faces and names, just awful. I lived here in Hooterville incognito for fifteen years until I started working here five years ago. Now people I recognize, (but cant remember when or where) come up to chat when I'm getting gas, at the bank, at restaurants, etc. Once while having lunch with Mrs, a gentleman I "recognized" stopped as they were leaving the restaurant to say hi and introduce his wife. Mrs asked me who they were afterwards? When we went to pay our tab, we found the gentleman paid for our bill before they left. Sadly I still don't remember his name or where I know him from. 1

One of my sisters owns restaurants near there but she lives in Palm Springs. Yeah I don’t think that’s why people bust on us from CA... You will be pleased to know that going grocery shopping usually takes 2X longer as I almost always bump into someone I know and we spend some time catching up. For a city of close to 120K people i got to know a large number of folks through our kids athletics & boostering.

Maybe it's the guy with the fancy cows! I am fairly great at work...not so much at my own Condo...I might not know the name..but I can often attach the adult child to the parent.

Airehead Posted October 12, 2019 Share #12 Posted October 12, 2019 Our little village is like that. Mr Aire was complaining about how long it took him to get out of the post office. I said then he should just got the city slicker one 15 minutes up the road. I’ll stay in my own village like life was intended.

I think the same goes for big towns, as you find nice and not so nice folks in both locales. Seems like with the electronic age, folks are not as likely to send thank yous. I do it for the children that are competing in the various track and field events, as well as, some of the mothers that I know from 4-H and FFA. sheep_herder ★ Posted October 13, 2019 Author Share #23 Posted October 13, 2019 We have several places to eat, and we are about to get a KFC and an A&W added to several others of the major fast food brands including one McDonalds. Currently there are four coffee shops. I think part of the draw for these places in a town of 9,000, is that we are on the interstate, have a community college, and have several tournaments (Basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and baseball) during the year. We also have a winery, art center, and museum that draw folks off the interstate. This also the center for Stockman Bank in Montana. There are two grocery stores, and many more bars than churches. Many of the bars are also casinos. And, no we do not need to show ID at the bank. I may not have been clear about the teller relaying the message to the lady in the drive up. That is the part that I found comforting, as many of you have indicated the lack or phasing out of tellers in your areas. Hope everyone is having a Great Weekend. It was a beautiful day in eastern Montana.

You're mostly right. In the Baltimore suburbs a lot of people are friendly like that and it's common to hear "Hon" at the end of a sentence: "Here's your change, Hon," "Don't forget your bag, Hon," etc. But it's getting less and less common for people to go beyond their job descriptions. I got a big taste of friendliness at stores for years because many of the thousands of former students I had taught became bank tellers, Dollar Tree Cashiers, Radiation Clinic Managers, Dental Assistants, etc. I got charged $25 too little at a shoe store and when I looked startled the cashier said, "I can't let a teacher from my high school pay full price - I gave you my employee discount." In around 2000, my mother needed an MRI before an inner ear operation, was too scared to schedule it, then one day I finally talked her into it. We went to the clinic and the scheduler said she could get it done a week later. I had taught the clinic's manager physics and asked the scheduler if Robin was available. I explained to Robin my mother's fear and asked if there was any way to fit her in before she changed her mind. 5 minutes later my mother was getting her MRI - too surprised it was happening so quickly to object. I've been retired 13 years now (since age 56) and the number of former students I run into working intro-level jobs as cashiers, etc. has fallen way off and some have even retired themselves - including Robin. Longjohn ★ Posted October 13, 2019 Share #26 Posted October 13, 2019 I have a Mercer address but Mercer is nine miles away. The Jackson Center post office is only five miles away. Jackson Center has no traffic lights, no grocery stores, it does have a summer only Dairy Queen, three bars, two churches, and just this year they got a Dollar General.
