Kzoo Posted July 8, 2019 Share #4 Posted July 8, 2019 1 minute ago, wilbur said: Yeah, don't wait. What he said. I had a breathing issue this morning. This is about the 3rd time in the last 7 years. I have some back issues and every once in a while I will get tightness in my midsection. This morning I woke with a stiff back and instead of immediately doing my stretches I went about getting ready for work. At some point I moved the wrong way and my back tightened (not a pull blown spasm thank goodness) and my midsection got very tight. The diaphragm wasn't working well at all. No air in no air out - or at lease very very little. I knew I had to stretch it out and let it relax. It probably lasted for all of 30 seconds but it felt like several minutes. It makes you appreciate breathing

Kirby Posted July 8, 2019 Share #7 Posted July 8, 2019 Definitely worth checking out. I recall when my Dad started getting short of breath on even short walks - it was not a good sign. But he got it fixed up and was fine after that. Take care of yourself!
BuffJim Posted July 8, 2019 Share #8 Posted July 8, 2019 My first bouts with it were pulmonary embolism. For me it got gradually worse over 8 months then finally a 'saddle embolism' clogged my breathing and almost kilt me. There were other symptoms too - swelling and redness in my varicose veins that were ignored by a medical professional. Of course many things can cause shortness of breath and they do warrant prompt medical attention.

Page Turner Posted July 8, 2019 Share #13 Posted July 8, 2019 ...high levels of anxiety can contribute to the feeling you describe. Some people get trapped in a cycle off SOB, which causes anxiety, which causes more SOB and some chest pain. Other people just have the big MI and drop over in their tracks. The reason you go to the physician for "some tests" are mostly to relieve your anxiety. If you're like me, and office visits make you anxious, you're screwed. Ralphie ★ Posted July 8, 2019 Share #34 Posted July 8, 2019 FWIW, when I had SOB it was because of conflicting meds prescribed by different doctors. I always though pharmacists were 'sposed to catch that, but I guess snot.

Yes, if you are not dying it is a real PITA to go to the ER. I got lucky one time when I went in after a bike crash. Went right in, and a pee test for blood, some road rash cleanup and an x-ray later I was outta there. Broken ribs - ouch!

Back in 2011 I was thinking about cycling for exercise but worried about my fitness for it. I needed my PCP's referral to see a specialist and I monitored my heart rate while walking with my old Garmin 305 + the heart strap, fed it into the Garmin app on my computer, printed out the chart and showed my PCP I was going over 150 bpm just walking up a long hill. He said that was enough evidence to justify the whole nine-yards of heart tests. I had them over 3 days: radioactive dye test and sonogram test with a technician watching my heart valves in real time. The treadmill test where I was getting out of breath easily. The final conclusion was my heart and lungs were fine and I was out of shape. I did a hilly 2.5 mile walk with 85 lb Jake the Golden Doodle and my avg. heart rate today was 122 bpm with a max of 133 and I was breathing a little heavily by the time I reached the tops of the two biggest hills, but I'm sure that's more of a weight problem.
