Road Runner Posted December 24, 2017 Share #1 Posted December 24, 2017 I was in my garage trying to get something off of a top shelf. I was standing on the top level my three foot step ladder when I lost my balance and started to fall backwards towards the concrete floor. I frantically reached for the shelf to stop my fall but my attempts to grasp it failed in rapid succession. At the very last split second, I managed to grab the lip of the shelf with but one finger and was able to halt my otherwise certain demise. If I had fallen in my current physical condition, my head would have hit the concrete floor with great force and would surely have split open like a ripe watermelon. Luckily for me, I escaped harm at the very last possible moment. Most of us go about our business everyday, with little apparent concern that great harm, even death, is always just one little wrong step away.
AirwickWithCheese Posted December 24, 2017 Share #2 Posted December 24, 2017 wow. Don't scare us like this. You and I have lots of cherry, strawberry, lemon, blueberry, and chocolate cheesecake to eat. I think I am forgetting some cheesecakes, this is another reason for you not to be climbing up on ladders.

I'm not as big a fan of cheesecake desserts as you. Some kinds of cheesecake are pretty good, if you know what I mean.

BuffJim Posted December 24, 2017 Share #17 Posted December 24, 2017 I fell on the stairs last night. Hurt my knee a little, but could have been much worse. Glad you’re OK, and suffered no great harm.
Longjohn ★ Posted December 24, 2017 Share #18 Posted December 24, 2017 I always got a laugh out of the stickers they put on ladders about half way up that say do not stand above this step. You would have to buy a ladder twice as tall as you need if you followed that.

smudge ★ Posted December 24, 2017 Share #20 Posted December 24, 2017 HoSmudge has a little three-step ladder. He's not very sure-footed on flat ground, uses a cane. Drives me nuts that he likes this ladder. (His way of being a daredevil boy??) Don't do that again, RR! Sheesh! 1

Further Posted December 24, 2017 Share #22 Posted December 24, 2017 My 70 yo cousin fell off a table saw he was standing on to reach for something in the garage rafters. He did not get seriously hurt but did hobble for a few weeks.

donkpow Posted December 25, 2017 Share #26 Posted December 25, 2017 There is a safety rule applicable to working aloft and climbing, the three point rule. That is to maintain three points of contact at all times. This is normally thought of as two feet and one hand in secure placement. You can increase your productivity with something like a work harness or saddle, freeing both hands for work. 2

Dchiefransom Posted December 25, 2017 Share #28 Posted December 25, 2017 If the ladder is sideways to the shelf, doesn't matter how tall it is when you lose balance. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Little-Giant-Ladders-5-ft-Aluminum-Type-1A-300-lbs-Platform-Step-Ladder/999968839

Still nervous on it, as I still have balance problems, but it's much better than the smaller one I had. Considering going up to the 7 foot version.
