Do you hate lucky people?

My son found out yesterday he is being sent to the Bahamas in Dec with one of the deep water suits to be filmed using it for the upcoming Blue Planet series, and today he found out from a local grocery chain that because he had shopped at some specific time his name went in a draw and he just won groceries for a year.

Part of me is really, really happy for him, part of me wants to punch him in the throat.

I like it when people are lucky, unless they are lucky at my expense.

Canada has always hated the successful but less so, the lucky.  I am sure your son made his luck with work.

There has got to be a dollar limit per month on groceries' dollar value....  So son should expect some extra requests from papa occasionally.

It works out to $5200, so he gets a $100 card for every week of the year.  For a single guy who cooks all his own food from scratch, it is going to take care of a huge amount of his grocery bill monthly.

For sure, given some noticeable food price increases this yr. :(  THat's great he cooks from scratch...it becomes habit then.

I've been envious of lucky or well-off people but never hated them for being lucky or well-off.

When I was in college, I envied the rich kids who could follow their passions without worrying if they'd develop skills that would pay the mortgage.

They could study acting, creative writing, dance, art. etc. and not worry that those are careers that often don't lead to steady employment.

But I didn't hate them or ask why they got to be so blessed while I grew up in a very poor family.  I wanted to be like them!

Fortunately I had wanted to be a chemist since age 12 and that led to having skiils that wouldn't make me rich, but would leave me middle-class comfortable.

So my goal was to be able to retire like the rich college kids: enough income to be active and pursue hobbies like piano lessons, owning a decent bicycle, online chess, putting together a garden including seed-growing stuff on an impulse to do a garden again and jump in when a friend or relative invites me to join in on a cruise or other big vacation.  It was Of Mice and Men's George dreaming of "We'll live off the fat of the land," plus some excitement.  I got there at age 55 3/4!

I hate lucky jerks, but don't mind lucky nice folks.  The "lucky" bit seems relatively irrelevant.

We sort of feel that we made our own luck.  There were a few breaks, but mostly it was just working hard and staying the course.  Doint the right thing is often boring.

I had a period of about 3 months, I think it was 2017, where everything I did ended up lucky. Little things like winning a few hundred at the casino or winning my fantasy football league. It was cool, but almost creepy. Nothing life changing.
Last week I won a pair of Tickets to a stage production of Tina, about Tina Turner. BuffCarla is excited to see it with me in November.
