One guy was a stud. Passed me at one light & by the next light 1 mile down I could not see him. The other guy had an 'lectric bike. I rode my wife's Domane for a couple of years when she stopped riding, now she's a riding machine and I needed to buy my own bike. I got a Madone. Popular Post Thaddeus Kosciuszko Posted August 1, 2021 Popular Post Share #1343 Posted August 1, 2021 I rode a section of the Erie Canal Bikeway that I don't ride as frequently as other sections, just for a little change of scenery. So, I drove to a park to bypass the sections I'd ridden earlier. Lock 15 on the Barge Canal. We've had a rainy July so the Mohawk River is running with more water than usual. I saw a number of touring cyclists heading east, which is the traditional direction to tour the Erie Canal Bikeway. The 'official' tour went through a few weeks ago so these cyclists were part of another tour or traveling independently. I saw one gentleman towing a trailer with a milk crate bungeed to the trailer. The trailer was so small the crate hung over the sides of the trailer platform. He looked like he was touring the trail, and I was impressed he could do so with all of his gear in a milk crate, as he had no panniers on his bike. Lock 15 is one of the designated bike/hike camping sites on the Canal, although you can stay overnight at just about any lock if you call the lock personnel ahead of time. Limited to four tents, first come first served, and free for 48 hours. I've stayed here before, and it was a good overnight. Bring earplugs, because the trains across the river run all night long and announce the crossings. Lock 16 in Mindenville. The canal west from the lock. Some other cyclists were stopped alongside the trail. I asked if they needed any assistance and they said they were watching the Guinea hens. So I stopped for a few moments to watch as well. One of Wilbur's relatives... I detoured off the Canal Bikeway to see a waterfall I hadn't visited in some years. It was a two-mile climb out of the valley to the town park where the waterfall was, then back down inside the park to the creek to pick up the trail to the falls. When I got down to the creek the trail I'd taken the last time was closed, so I had to climb back up to the road and try another route to the falls. Not a total loss, as there was this view of the Mohawk Valley. Halfway back down there was a side dirt road with a trail to the observation platform for the falls. The town put the observation platform there because too many people were scrambling down the steep sides of the creek bed, getting hurt, and then needing rescue. This was the trail to platform, which wasn't too bad on the road bike. Here we are at the observation platform. Do you see the falls? Yeah, well neither did I. There was, however, a well-worn trail around the platform where a person could try to get a good view at the falls by scrambling down the steep side of the creek bed, getting hurt, and then needing rescue. Kinda defeats the intent of the observation platform to let the trees grow to obscure the falls. Anyway, it was a nice ride downhill back to the Bikeway. The weather forecast said a storm front was going to move in at 1, and it was approaching 2 as I neared my starting point. I could feel the winds picking up - headwinds, of course. I did make it back to where I'd parked the car, but the ominous clouds gathered. The rain held off for a bit while I went to a local farm stand where I had an ice tea and a piece of blueberry-apple pie. A good day and a good ride - temperature in the low-mid 70's with a slight overcast, some of my favorite riding conditions. 62.6 miles. 8

Best. Weather. EVER! Started about 68, partly cloudy, no wind, finished at about 78, sunny, still no wind. A really well organized ride, not too crowded, about 1000 bikes. And free pizza & beer! But the day was ruined when we went to the other brewery in town and they were all out of the amazing Thong Remover Trippel 5
