shootingstar Posted February 21, 2022 Share #1 Posted February 21, 2022 I know 2 women who had to actively stop themselves from having a glass of red wine every evening. It was a habit that crept slowly in. Since I am somewhat allergic to alcohol, it keeps me from imbibing much except for special occasions which has been several times / yr. That's why I'm asking since my "problem" already naturally creates a self-restraint. Even the friends I am with, either have same allergy or not much interested/have a modest glass. Having wine for dinner doesn't happen much. I had no interest in challenging my problem by trying beer. In my (Asian) side of family, it seems genetic, at least. No, not all Asians get drunk as easily as I. So what is acceptable frequency for yourself before it becomes a habit that needs to be reduced? Popular Post ChrisL Posted February 21, 2022 Popular Post Share #2 Posted February 21, 2022 I don’t think frequency is the issue, it’s your behavior and rational for having the wine. A snort of red wine nightly isn’t an issue (IMHO) but a bottle may be problematic. Drinking a glass for health as opposed to drinking to cope with life… My Opa always had a shot of gin every evening “for his health”. I don’t see that as problematic even if it was for his mental health!

Many medical experts agree that this is actually beneficial. Like Chris said, depends on why. A good dinner should include good wine (or beer). A nightcap is a nice way to end a day. A beer or 2 in the locker room after the game. Of course, all of that in one day, or the 3 or 6 beers after a game becomes rather unhealthy. A friend who lived in Italy most of his life was sent to alcohol counseling by his new US employer, for being truthful about daily wine consumption, He saw no issue, wine with meals is just how it's done in Italy. Lent is coming, I'll give up beer and wine. But not alcohol. hat's not the point. It does become a sacrifice to sit down with a nice pasta and no wine, or burgers and water. An occasional bourbon by the fire isn't the same.
groupw Posted February 21, 2022 Share #4 Posted February 21, 2022 I usually finish one drink before I start on the next! Really, I probably average a drink per day. Most days it’s 1. Some days a couple. Some days I don’t drink at all.

Well, there was a condo owner who lived above me for a few years. I did notice several times...taking the elevator just before 6:30 am, (yes, I was going to bike to work..) he was red and smelled of alcohol. In an elevator, it can be noticeable. He was also civil..but he was going to driving off at that time of morning. He also away for months working 450 km. north in the oil sands. He always seemed ok as an owner.. He moved away/sold his place.

shootingstar Posted February 21, 2022 Author Share #10 Posted February 21, 2022 So I have these bottles of wine and sadly, dearie is not around to share or use leftover for cooking. I seriously cannot open a full bottle unless 1-2 friends share. He did drink beer in earlier years..then just lost interest. Of course, enjoying fine wine a few times/yr. A couple I visited ...they live in the smaller region of vineyards and wine production (vancouver island): I noticed they had over 6 open bottles of wine in the fridge, probably gifts from guests/family visiting. They buy soda water to weaken their wine when I bought my gift bottle for them after we visited a vineyard just 20 min. away. I initially offered to buy wine on our way home from airport after picking me up. They weren't interested. Their 3 adult children have lived in other parts of the world for past few yrs. A buddy, with an admitted drinking problem, told me that a little hair off the dog that bit you , really does seem to work. I might done some morning drinking a few times, but it wasn't hair off the dog, it was more like a an 11:30 tee time or kick off. The most recent episode involved an emergency trip to West Virginia (WV is reason enough to start drinking early), but I was in Brunswick, 6+ hours S/W from the house. Rather than drive home (north of the airport) then drive down to the airport at an ungodly hour (Atlanta traffic), I stayed nearish the coast & drove to the ATL early the next morning. I parked the truck, walked into the terminal, walked to my concourse (a considerable distance at the ATL). At the top of the escalator was a Sam Adams pub, it was open, I had plenty of time, so I had a seat & ordered a beer. Beer came, I drank, I asked if they had a pub menu. The beertender said yes, but they weren't serving lunch yet, but the Wendy's across the hall was still serving breakfast. Confuzzled, I looked at my watch (for the record, a fine Swiss timepiece) and saw that it was 10:20 AM. Oh my goodness.

MickinMD ★ Posted February 22, 2022 Share #31 Posted February 22, 2022 I don't drink often, maybe twice a month and usually one or two beers, but there are occasions when I'll drink a 6 pack over several hours - especially if eating steamed crabs is part of the day. I'm a beer or wine drinker - a shot of hard liquor only if everyone's celebrating something and doing the same. If I'm relaxing at home and in the mood for it a couple times a year, I'll put away at least half a bottle of wine - along with summer sausage, cheese and crackers. When I go to crab, bull or oyster roasts or a dance (when there's no pandemic), the affair generally lasts 3 hours. I won't begin drinking beer until the last hour so I don't get publicly drunk - I developed that habit when I was a member of county commissions, a club's political officer, etc. and always presenting a sober appearance was very important. There was one occasion when Maryland Governor Harry Hughes and his State Police Officer driver were both too drunk to get his limo out of a parking lot. I drove it out to the main street, then told the driver to drive slow and be VERY careful. That was a couple months after Hughes signed into law a bill that required drunk drivers to lose their licenses. That was later modified to a series of steps (breathalyzer for car, jail/home detention, loss of license) for multiple DUI's.
Randomguy Posted February 22, 2022 Share #32 Posted February 22, 2022 I have beer zima in the fridge, but generally don't touch it unless the gf is over and we have a couple each, sometimes a third. It is fun, tastes good, and is social. In the summer, I might have a beer after a particularly long or good ride. If I hang with friends and it is time to drink a fair bit, I will also drink a fair bit that night and enjoy it properly. Previously had a couple of girlfriends who drank frequently, one did it as a means of self-medication, I feel. Since I am a social drinker, I will drink up to the level of who I am hanging out with. If I really start enjoying the frequency of it, I will just stop for a while because I like to drink, and don't want to ever take the chance of it becoming habitual or getting addicted to anything. I feel sorry for the Italian guy in the story above, North Americans tend to be so black and white on these issues. College drinking is different, I drank a lot in college, but so did everyone else. People in WI drink more than lots of other places, doesn't mean it is a problem, but rather a matter of course and culturally engrained.
Razors Edge ★ Posted February 22, 2022 Share #33 Posted February 22, 2022 I have a beer several times a week with dinner. As a child of an alcoholic, it's important to understand how alcohol can be either a "normal" thing or a dangerous one. I very rarely get "drunk" - last time was on vacation and it was a blast but not something that I would think is fun much more often. Luckily, beer comes in mild - maybe 5% ABV - up to strong - maybe 11%+ ABV - and if I have a pint of that stronger stuff, I feel it, but my normal stuff is 5%-8%. So, everything in moderation remains a good mantra. A beer with food has a mild impact, but adds a nice component to the meal. But drinking to drink? Not really my thing. Social drinking, like a happy hour, is pleasant enough, but wouldn't be a reason to drink too much more than normal.

Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted February 22, 2022 Share #39 Posted February 22, 2022 @shootingstar interpret “one of the drunkest cities in the area” to mean that, per capita, they consume higher amounts of alcohol than other comparable areas. For example, Madison WI is the state Capitol and home to the University of Wisconsin. Per capita, they consume 5 gallons of beer, wine, and hard liquor per month. Salt Lake City UT is predominantly a Mormon community. Their alcohol consumption would be one cup per month. Note: for this example, I made up the numbers as I don’t have time to research the actual consumption amounts for each of the communities used.

His ex was from the UK and hence, they went overseas several times to visit. But still he didn't seem interested at all to learn more about the beers, ales or get into it. I think his stepfather occasionally had too much at home and did hit his mother..who was a kind tempered woman . (I knew her for over a decade before she died.) He probably pschologically separated himself never to become like his stepfather. So to him wine, was the drink to be enjoyed with loved ones for a special/good meal occasionally. I admit: I was glad to be with someone who I never got drunk.. he easily would have 2 glasses of wine. Me only 1/3 of glass. All my memory meals with wine and him, are happy. Dirtyhip Posted February 22, 2022 Share #42 Posted February 22, 2022 For me, not much more than one night of drinking per year. It is terrible for us anyway.

If you have answered YES to any one of the questions, there is a definite warning that you may be an alcoholic. If you have answered YES to any two, the chances are that you are an alcoholic. If you answered YES to three or more, you are definitely an alcoholic. (The test questions are used at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore, MD, in deciding whether or not a patient is an alcoholic). I score 3. However #17 happened over 40 years ago. #12 due to having to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom after 3 or 4 beers. #10 depends on the definition of 'crave'. I have a beer or three around 9 PM most nights. I'm thinking it's more of a habit than a craving.

ChrisL Posted February 23, 2022 Share #49 Posted February 23, 2022 I enjoy beer but limit myself to maybe 2 bottles a month. More for diabetes management than anything else. I drank a six pack a week before diabetes. Now I buy a 12 pack and tell my son to save me a few and don’t freaking drink the last one. When I’m down to the last bottle I’ll get another 12 pack. My son will drink most of it though.
