They taste great in countries closer to the equator. I think they are allowed to ripen longer on the tree.
bikeman564™ Posted January 29, 2018 Share #8 Posted January 29, 2018 6 is optimal IMO, but there is a very small window of opportunity. I buy 4's.

Parr8hed Posted January 29, 2018 Share #13 Posted January 29, 2018 not a big fan of any of them. I usually have one a day but it's ground up in a smoothie. I prefer number 6.

Kzoo Posted January 29, 2018 Share #21 Posted January 29, 2018 5 has the perfect blend of sweetness and flavor. Any riper and the flavor overwhelms and the sweetness has turned to starches.

ChrisL Posted January 29, 2018 Share #23 Posted January 29, 2018 I don't think I've had a banana since becoming diabetic.... Prolly 6 but I could do 5 or 7. I prefer over ripe to under ripe.

Longjohn ★ Posted January 29, 2018 Share #27 Posted January 29, 2018 2 thru 7 works for me. Nutritionally they say the riper they are the better they are for you. If they have a variety at a rest stop I’ll take a ripe one. I have seen rest stops that only had green bananas. I’ll still eat them.

Thaddeus Kosciuszko Posted January 30, 2018 Share #33 Posted January 30, 2018 I think 5 is the best choice. According to the chart, if you buy a '5' then it grows as it ripens into a 6. More fruit for the same amount of money, no effort, and only a little waiting. You could buy a 1, but by the time it's ripe you're not any more ahead than if you bought a 5, and you have to stand around forever waiting for it to ripen, besides. You could buy a 6 and let it ripen into a 7, but then you get swindled because your banana shrinks you end up with a smaller volume of fruit. All this, of course, assumes we agree the banana can be labeled a fruit. If not, then we have to start all over again after we decide whether the banana is a berry or an herb.
