I did interview for a Mechanical Engineering job working with fire suppression pumps. The ME I'd be replacing tried to stump me with a failure question, which didn't stump me at all and I even explained what the other failure modes would look like. Biggest issue is a I don't know Hydraulic theory and curves (though hiring manager kept emphasizing he can teach me those) and I haven't done Labview programming (though everyone I know who has done it learned on the job) the programming aspect is why they decided to consider an Electrical Engineer. Tomorrow I have an interview for a Quality Engineering job for a Lithium battery manufacturer, originally they were aiming at electrical vehicle market, but sounds like they now do some hybrid buses and micro-power grid systems. Amazing how diverse of areas I can get interviews for (though versatility always been my biggest strength) but just can't get a job because always lacking experience in area they want, apparently most don't think people can learn. Our prime function was to act as the Navy's in-service engineering agent, providing technical and logistical support to the fleet as required. We worked with the contractors to acquire and install the best possible product for the Navy and subsequently oversaw training, parts support and upgrades. We worked constantly to improve the radar's maintainability and reliability in direct support of fleet personnel. HiWay61 Posted January 24, 2018 Share #70 Posted January 24, 2018 Retired after 42 years in trust banking. I now spend time volunteering - Capital Development Committee of the local public library, treasurer of the local arts foundation, on the board of an organization that provides services to folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities and several roles in my church - and doing a bunch of outdoor stuff. I also occasionally help out a friend who builds custom furniture and cabinets. Always wanted a wood shop in my home but never had one. This occasional side job gives me the opportunity to do some of that stuff.

Popular Post MickinMD ★ Posted January 25, 2018 Popular Post Share #93 Posted January 25, 2018 I'm retired from my 2nd career, 22 years as lead teacher for Honors (Gifted and Talented) Chemistry and Physics at Maryland's largest high school, as well as coach of the Cross Country, Varsity Softball (Fastpitch), and Chess Teams at various times. Before that I was a Process Development (Organic) Chemist and was Chief Research Chemist for Minerec, a no longer existing subsidiary of Dow Chemical. At that time, Industrial Bench Chemist was the career with the shortest avg. lifespan of college graduates. I started running again after several years away from it on Saturdays and could taste the chemicals I had been working with the previous week. So I changed careers. Before that I completed graduate school at IIT on a Teaching Assistantship and full scholarship. Before that I worked my way to a bachelor's degree through UMBC. flipping hamburgers at a fast food place, working at a shipyard or grinding welds for a construction company in the summer, until I got a job doing chemistry research on campus after my sophomore year. NEW CAREER? Back in the early '90's, I was in the Black Hills of South Dakota and did the tour in Lead, SD, of the abandoned Broken Boot Gold Mine. At the end of the tour we were allowed to pick a couple paperweight-sized pieces of gold ore from a pile and I asked our knowledgeable guide, a retired company man who had worked his way up from miner to middle management, if we were getting something like 0.001% gold. He said it was probably more like 0.1%. I told him I had worked for a company called "Minerec," short for "Mine Recovery," and I knew how to design and make safe, non-toxic, organic chemicals that made the recovery of 0.1% copper, zinc, and some other metals ores very profitable. They are called "flotation reagents." I explained how that I could probably make one for gold, but it might take 5-10 years and require $1,000,000 per year in research costs. Our guide said, "If you could do that, a lot of people in the Black Hills would want to talk to you. In fact, I bet some of them would fund your work if what you say is true and you presented it to them." So if I ever get bored of a comfortable retirement and want to work 80-100 hour weeks for the next 5-10 years, I think I have a new career to go after.
