Longjohn ★ Posted January 23, 2018 Share #12 Posted January 23, 2018 I'm retired, after my last bike crash I thought I would have never been able to return to my job if I had still been working. Spent the next seven months with a gimpy shoulder. Got a second opinion and the new surgeon repaired my shoulder, I could probably do my job again if I had to.

maddmaxx ★ Posted January 23, 2018 Share #23 Posted January 23, 2018 I too am retired. Through much of my life I was a prototyper, a one or few of a kind specialist who made things that didn't exist elsewhere. For Pratt and Whitney, those were the home sized (yes they would have swallowed your house) test cells for testing jet engines. Later I got into the laser business where much of what I did was in the form of research on DARPA programs with the occasional foray into space programs or commercial programs for large companies like Nikon. As such I was a limited duty machinist, an electroniker, a purchasing agent, a process planner, tech writer and general all around grunt. After retiring I worked in a hobby shoppe but that wasn't really a living as I don't understand how anyone could work for $10 hr unless they really loved the job. But then.......bottom line, I never really considered it work. It was so different from the run of the mill do the same thing every day sort of job that it was actually fun to go to work about 80% of the time. Changes in the modern business world make the other 20% feel like hell.

Popular Post Rattlecan ★ Posted January 23, 2018 Popular Post Share #27 Posted January 23, 2018 For most of my working life, I was a commercial tourist, re locating various cargoes around the continent. Spent a few years in the middle of all that teaching other people how to steer and gear 18 wheel juggernauts. Now retired from that and earn my daily crumbs fixing bicycles and making wheels of the round variety to fit those machines. I know I should probably be making square ones to fit in here, but there doesn't seem to be much of a market for them. 4

Road Runner Posted January 23, 2018 Author Share #37 Posted January 23, 2018 I worked as an electronic engineering technician for the DOD for 37 years. My expertise was shipboard guided missile radar systems for the first 10 years, and then shipboard air search radar for the last 27. Our prime function was to act as the Navy's in-service engineering agent, providing technical and logistical support to the fleet as required. We worked with the contractors to acquire and install the best possible product for the Navy and subsequently oversaw training, parts support and upgrades. We worked constantly to improve the radar's maintainability and reliability in direct support of fleet personnel.
